On Repeat #35

TESSA
On My Own - Miley Cyrus
I know I'm way behind the bandwagon on this one, but God damn, Miley. A+ 10/10 on this whole album. It's a very real possibility that so far in 2014 all I've listened to is Bangerz and Beyonce. You have to admit that's a pretty flawless combination though (because they're both queens, get over it). Anyway, I really enjoy this whole album, it's been great for my commutes and I can jam out to the whole thing, non-stop. This song always seems to be the one I start out with though. Let's be real, who doesn't love a song about being strong and independent? Beyonce may have done it first, but dare I say: Miley did it better. If you have been under a rock (like me) and haven't yet dis
covered this album, go do it right now. You won't regret it.

Fade Away- Selah Sue
I know that I've used Selah Sue before, but I recently discovered this song again and just kept listening to it. It's whatever, because she is amazing. Seriously, not only is she beyond talented, let's just talk about hair and style envy. She is one of the best performers I've seen and such a chill person from the short little hug I got from her (plus a picture in which I am so grateful for). Her songs always have a deeper meaning without being chalked full of lyrics, and I love that so much about her songwriting. It's a pretty chill rhythm and is just a relaxing song. I say that, even though the lyrics are pretty depressing.

sad love song from someone else - LITTLEFOOT
This week's selection was actually brought to me via YouTube. Someone featured it as background music so I decided to check the band out. What originally stuck me was the style, which seems fairly similar to The Growlers (which I've been all about lately). They still maintain the laid back, almost beach vibe - but the female vocals read more...ethereal? Is that too dramatic? Probably. You can actually download this single for free from their bandcamp (linked above) but be sure to check out their other tracks while you're there. Their lyrics are less than uplifting, but I think it fits their sound well - and my personality.  Hopefully I can hunt down more of their music in the future.

This World- Selah Sue
I've had a girl crush on Selah ever since Rachel and I saw her perform in Denver a year ago (take me back plzzz). I absolutely love her style and for some reason my obsession with her has made a come back this week. Her voice is amazing and let's not start on hair envy. Anyway, Selah and Passenger have definitely been on repeat this week. Maybe the world is telling me to chill out, who knows.

Strange Fruit – Billie Holiday
Alright, I thought I’d spare you guys another Haim selection this week (ps they were on point live and I need them all to be my best friends kthxbai). Instead I’ve got a bit of a throwback here. I’m sure everyone is familiar with good ol’ Billie, and I’ve gotten into this for the past week or so. Billie’s voice is incredibly interesting, and there’s quite a bit of history to the song. Apparently, it was originally a poem which was then set to music and sang at anti-racism protests way, way back in the day. It’s just slightly more serious than One Direction, but hey. I believe it was also sampled on one of Kanye’s recent tracks so woooooo.

Battle Born Album - The Killers
It is absolutely impossible for me to pick one song of this album. I think the only one I'm not a huge fan of is Heart of a Girl, because the rest are incredible. I had this album on repeat last January for about three months and my roommate became completely obsessed as well. I've never considered The Killers a favorite band until I got this CD (Yes, I actually bought the physical CD. That's how amazing it is.) and now I love them. This album will always have a special place in my heart though.
Notable tracks: Here With Me, Be Still, Miss Atomic Bomb, The Way it Was

Around the Block - Pretty Lights
As much as I desperately want to post a HAIM song, I shall resist (which BTW they are flawless & if you ever get the chance to see them live do it. Rachel & I had the honor of being a foot away from Alana last night). Pretty Lights has been on my radar since "Finally Moving" came out, but I've been getting more into him recently. And his cats are bomb (@kitty_lights on insta). Don't ask. Anyway, this song is A+ 10/10. This may be my favorite song from him ever, so you should defs check it outttt. Desperately wished I could've been in two places at once last night and seen him as well, but alas, HAIM won that battle & I don't regret it. Especially since my co-worker Kyle went and I know I'll get to hear all about it.

Hello fellow Broke Girls!
Every Friday, look out for our music edit: On Repeat. Each girl will be posting a song that we just can't get enough of this week, and trust me there will be something for everyone. Read on and find out what we've been loving recently, and check it out for yourself!

Fyah Fyah – Selah Sue
This week I haven’t been able to get enough of Selah Sue, her kickass music, and crazy hair. At only 23, this Belgian lady has been at the music game for years already. Fyah Fyah, I think, is one of the coolest tracks on the album. The beginning is quite mellow and soulful, but then bursts into some insane reggae/rap runs. Her tone is incredibly unique, even live (fellow Broke Girl Tori and I saw her this past fall). It’s been several months and I still haven’t gotten over her, so check her out dudes!

Mama's Broken Heart - Miranda Lambert
Lately my music mood has been as random as putting my phone on shuffle, but no matter what I find myself coming back to Miranda Lambert. I've had her on my Spotify, Pandora, and on repeat on my phone. There's just something about the warmer weather (that Kansas is currently lacking) that makes me want to put country songs on repeat (currently all of my Recently Added is exclusively country). Though I love the whole album, Mama's Broken Heart has definitely been a song that I've found myself searching for to press play repeatedly.

Stoked and Broke - Fidlar
Oh, Fidlar, singing the anthems of the underachiever like Cheap Beer and, this week's song, Stoked and Broke. They had my heart when I saw them live when they toured with another favorite band of mine, Jeff the Brotherhood. The first time I ever heard them was on that tour. I also had the chance to meet them which was amazing, even if it was only for introductions; however, that turns into a longer, more embarrassing story. All that asIiide, this week has definitely been a week where Fidlar, Jeff, and Foals have been on repeat. Check these foxes out, yo!

JEN
Waste - Phish
Unlike my fellow broke girls, my choice this week is a bit of a throwback. Billy Breathes by Phish came out in 1996 (ugh, I was so young!) but I just recently discovered them on 8tracks and have not been able to stop listening to that album. They're a very chill band with obvious influences from the 70s (especially Simon & Garfunkel) and a great background to have when studying. I highly recommend them if you're feeling mellow and enjoy great instrumentals. This song I chose in particular because all I've been wanting to do is stop studying for ONE FREAKING second and just read/watch TV/do whatever the hell I want and hang out with some specially chosen people. But alas, that will not happen for another month, so in the meantime I live through this song.

I Am Not a Robot - Marina and the Diamonds
So, if there's one song you should be utterly obsessed with, (or person even) Marina and the Diamonds's I Am Not a Robot has been stuck in my head for the past 7 months... yes, SEVEN months. I constantly find myself wanting to listen to Marina 24/7. Whether you're in a cocky bitch or a self-loathing little girl mood. She's the absolute perfect fit. (No but really I highly recommend I Am Not A Robot, it's amazing.)
