On Repeat #34 | Work Out Inspiration

Continuing from our themed "Best of 2013" On Repeat, Tori came up with the idea to share our favorite workout songs with you guys, inspired by everybody making a New Years resolution to get back to the gym. Any songs you think we missed? Comment below! xx FBG

RACHEL
1. I'll Make a Man Out of You - Mulan soundtrack (Danny Osmond)
2. Higher - The Saturdays
3. Bonfire (explicit) - Childish Gambino
Do I even need to mention why this Disney song made my list? It has a great pace that helps me build up to a sprint, plus it's badass and inspirational. As for The Saturdays, I think Tori and I discovered this brilliance of this song for workouts (when I was in much better shape...) Lastly, I couldn't go without throwing a little rap in the mix. "Bonfire" is  on point and will forever be on my workout playlist.

TORI
1. Va Va Voom- Nicki Minaj
2. Y.A.L.A- MIA
3. Pelican- The Maccabees
I don't even like Nicki Minaj, but ever since I saw Claire's "Best Lipsticks" video set to Va Va Voom it's been stuck in my head. It's good to work out to because of it's beat. Which is also why I chose Y.A.L.A by MIA. Well, I mean, do I need a reason? MIA is a badass. The Maccabees definitely feel out of place in this selection but I love this song. Also, just want to add that that I'm impressed Rachel, Tessa, and I didn't choose One Direction. Probably because it's just a given.

TESSA
1. Send It Up - Kanye West
2. Backseat Freestyle - Kendrick Lamar
3. Tapout - Rich Gang
Of course I don't stray for my love of rap when working out. I just find that it pumps me up the best, and also pushes me through brutal interval workouts on the treadmill. Kanye was an obvious choice here, Yeezus has gotten me through many (okay probably like 4) 2 mile runs in the past year. Of course I had to throw Kendrick in, seeing as Rachel took my original second place choice (Childish Gambino's Bonfire) plus Backseat Freestyle is pretty much 100% in your face. Tap Out was kind of a throw in, because honestly any hip hop song tends to get the job done for me.

JEN
1. Werkin' Girls - Angel Haze
2. m.A.A.d. city - Kendrick Lamar
3. Dark Horse - Katy Perry
I have the most random list of all time. Hate on me. Number 1 is from the movie The Heat starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy so you really can't go wrong. It's also just girl power to the max and that always pumps me up. I'm following that track up with more Kendrick, surprise surprise. This song makes me so pumped with that consistent beat in the background. Also, every time they yell "yah yah yah yah" I feel the need to fist bump..... Anyway, the last track may seem to be out of left field but it's super emotional and spiteful which can drive any girl forward easily.

KAYLEY
1. Just Can't Get Enough - Depeche Mode
2. She's Not Afraid - One Direction
3. Roar - Katy Perry
So, I think everyones top three are a little bit random considering different things motivate different people. My number one is Just Can't Get Enough it's an eighties classic and it really gets me going. I think a lot of eighties music would be ideal for working out. Second, another real up beat song by none other than my favorite idiots - One Direction. I sometimes just listen to their entire albums but I picked one that really gets me pumped. Last but not least, Roar by Katy Perry - she has a lot of good pop/upbeat songs to choose from but I really enjoy Roar because I find it to be really empowering (to me at least). Especially the line "I went from zero, to my own hero".

Mask Mania

So I've had this draft sitting here for a while and I'm finally getting around to finishing it. Whoops. Anyway, I'm sure as much as you wanted to hear that you're much more interested in hearing about what I'm here to actually talk about: my mask line up. As many of you know by now, I'm very into my skincare so of course masks are a staple in my line up. I've actually done an in depth post on two of my masks here, therefore they won't be talked about much here except for a quick shout out for keeping my skin manageable.

Freeman's Anti-Stress Mask Dead Sea Minerals
I've got quite the love for this mask. I typically use it about once a week just because I love it so much, even if my skin isn't really acting up. It's got a wonderful scent - kind of fresh and ocean-y as you would expect from the name. What I didn't expect however was for it to be bright teal. I'm talking color of the packaging teal. But I can get over that for how much I love it. It claims to balance moisture while unclogging pores and help with smoother skin and radiance. I would agree with all but the radiance part, I don't really see a glowing difference in my skin, but it definitely helps clear out my pores without losing moisture. Especially compared to my Avon and Formula 10.0.6 selections.

Freeman's Revealing Peel Off Mask Pomegranate
Obviously, I've got a bit of love for Freeman's here. I think they were on promo at Ulta when I bought this and I was totally a sucker for the scent of this because let's face it, who can resist a wonderful, fruity scent? Certainly not me. This mask doesn't make it into my line up nearly as often as it should. I use it about once a month, if I remember. Remind me to up the ante on using this one, please. This is another purifying mask, but definitely much gentler compared to the others. What really sold me on this was the antioxidant mix to protect against free radicals. I'm all about the anti-aging thing, so of course anything to protect against that is a win in my book.

Avon Clearskin Pore Penetrating Black Mineral Mask & Formula 10.0.6 Pores Be Pure Skin-Clarifying Mud Mask
As I mentioned before, I've done an in depth post on both of these masks before, but just to give you a little update I still am using them. I've nearly finished my Avon one, as I tend to favor it a little bit more. I've gone from using it about once a week to once every other week, or more often when I feel like my skin has been acting up. I've definitely fallen off using my Formula 10.0.6 offering though. I'm just not as impressed by it and definitely turned off by the fact that it has mineral oil.

So there you have it, my current mask line up completed. I'm always looking for new recommendations so if you have any in mind please feel free to suggest them below. What masks are in your line up? Any holy grails?

Miracle Mask

As the other girls can attest, I've been having major meltdowns about my hair. The last time I had it dyed I made the mistake of washing/ combing my hair that morning. Anyone who has ever bleached their hair will know that leads to a pretty excruciating appointment. I didn't realize until days after the full extent of that mistake. My hair was over-processed and the ends were bent in all different directions just to show me how terrible of a person I am. My hair has never been so damaged.

I've been wanting to grow my hair out into a bob and any length cut off when your hair is this short feels like I've been given a buzz cut. Grasping at any straws to keep my hair I started researching hair masks like my life depended on it. My Aussie 3 Minute Miracle and line of Organix hair masks wouldn't even touch the damage I had done.

Finally, a hair mask sent from heaven. It's more of a mixture of two since I tried them individually and they didn't make me cry tears of joy. First, on dry hair I put some Virgin Coconut Oil on the ends and then work it completely into my hair. I love using Coconut Oil because even though it is a solid in the jar, it just melts into your palms and is easy to use. I've had this jar for awhile, I bought this at my local grocery store awhile back for pretty cheap and I've used it for a range of reasons. After I've combed that through my hair, I use the Redken Extreme Strength Builder Plus. I saw Kate from gh0stparties post on this and she seriously was not lying about how amazing it smells. Apart from the smell it does some serious work on your hair. The Redken Extreme Line is based on the IPN (Interlock Protein Network) that works at the source of the problem rather than just cover up the issues, which is what I feel like a lot of hair masks do.

After I've combed my hair again to make sure that the Redken product and Coconut Oil have mixed together I put a shower cap over my hair and blow dry it for just a little bit (low heat) and then leave it on for thirty minutes. I say thirty minutes because I've done my fair share of research on this. Masks that are supposed to stay on overnight do not do anything more than one for thirty minutes. No matter the base of the mask, the hair will absorb all it can in that thirty minutes. Masks that stay on overnight can actually do more damage by over-conditioning your hair which can make it brittle and prone to breakage. So only thirty minutes, people!

Annyywayyy, after that thirty minutes, I just rinse it out and follow it with my Lee Stafford Toning Shampoo and Conditioner. This helped my hair so much. The mixture of both these products left my hair and scalp feeling like I haven't put it through months of torture. I use this about twice a week and I feel like it earns the name 'Miracle Mask.'

If you try this you'll have to let me know how it works for you!

Review | Skincare Products

Hi everyone and Happy 2014! I am beyond excited for what this year has in store for me. Last semester was really difficult and stressful but the fact that I managed to pull through it with good grades really helped with my motivation! On top of that great news, I've been spending some much-needed time with family, friends, and my boyfriend Netflix. Just kidding, I also have a real boyfriend but we all know who's the top priority here (Netflix).

So today I bring to you the first ever Skincare Review video. It's a sort of mashup between a Skincare Routine and Product Review because I also include products that I found didn't work or were just generally terrible. I hope you enjoy it! Let us know if videos like this are interesting to you readers and leave a comment below!

Beauty Resolutions

Yes, the time of year for sweeping self-change has arrived. I, like most people, have these grand notions of getting healthier and just generally getting my shit together. In fact that encompasses my resolution fairly well. I know what I need to do to have a better year (read: being fit does not involve some combo of Jimmy John’s, beer, and Netflix). Execution is where I struggle. Still, I’ve penned a few beauty-related resolutions for myself which should be simpler to manage.
Drink more water
Is this not obvious? Hydrating myself properly will not only help improve my overall health, but should aid in improving my complexion.  Work is my place to start. Every two hours, I’m hoping to finish around 32oz of ice water. As for class and weekends, I’m looking forward to sprucing things up with fruit and fresh mint (I’ve successfully kept a plant alive for 6 months and fail to put it to use). I don’t think soda will ever leave my life fully, I mean how am I supposed to resist Baja Blast? Regardless, it will be an occasional treat.
 Shop the stash
In 2013 my makeup collection ballooned to a whole new level. Tessa and I successfully completed our makeup ban for December, prompting this resolution. I have various products that merely take up space. It’s easy to be swept up in the excitement of a new product, but it can lead to some negligence. To remedy this, I’m strongly considering extending my makeup ban for another month to focus on using some forgotten finds. Essentially, I don’t want to reach a point where the majority of my collection is under-utilized. Doing so will force me to make use of what I have and be creative when it comes to makeup. Challenge accepted.
 Body care
When it comes to this area, I’m horrendous. For someone with a fairly meticulous facial skincare routine, I basically ignore the rest of the organ. Moisturizing, exfoliating, soaking, whatever are all chores in my mind. I’m too easy to forget that the rest of my skin ages as well and thus requires maintenance. So, going forward I’m making it a priority to look after it better. I’m looking forward to stocking up on some new body care, obviously to fill the void of no makeup purchases.
 Skincare additions
Thus far I’ve nailed down a basic routine that I’m happy with. Most of the time my skin is well behaved, but now it’s time to up the ante. Proverbially, I’ve learned to walk and now it’s time to run. The name of the game will be treatments and serums, along with locking down a good SPF. Eye cream is also at the top of my list, to fix the deep ravines of fine lines forming beneath my eyes. Ole Henriksen, Clarins, and Peter Thomas Roth are a few brands I’d specifically like to investigate in the New Year.

How 'bout you dudes, any beauty resolutions? Comment below! Until next week,

xx
Rachel
