On Repeat #34 | Work Out Inspiration

Continuing from our themed "Best of 2013" On Repeat, Tori came up with the idea to share our favorite workout songs with you guys, inspired by everybody making a New Years resolution to get back to the gym. Any songs you think we missed? Comment below! xx FBG

RACHEL
1. I'll Make a Man Out of You - Mulan soundtrack (Danny Osmond)
2. Higher - The Saturdays
3. Bonfire (explicit) - Childish Gambino
Do I even need to mention why this Disney song made my list? It has a great pace that helps me build up to a sprint, plus it's badass and inspirational. As for The Saturdays, I think Tori and I discovered this brilliance of this song for workouts (when I was in much better shape...) Lastly, I couldn't go without throwing a little rap in the mix. "Bonfire" is  on point and will forever be on my workout playlist.

TORI
1. Va Va Voom- Nicki Minaj
2. Y.A.L.A- MIA
3. Pelican- The Maccabees
I don't even like Nicki Minaj, but ever since I saw Claire's "Best Lipsticks" video set to Va Va Voom it's been stuck in my head. It's good to work out to because of it's beat. Which is also why I chose Y.A.L.A by MIA. Well, I mean, do I need a reason? MIA is a badass. The Maccabees definitely feel out of place in this selection but I love this song. Also, just want to add that that I'm impressed Rachel, Tessa, and I didn't choose One Direction. Probably because it's just a given.

TESSA
1. Send It Up - Kanye West
2. Backseat Freestyle - Kendrick Lamar
3. Tapout - Rich Gang
Of course I don't stray for my love of rap when working out. I just find that it pumps me up the best, and also pushes me through brutal interval workouts on the treadmill. Kanye was an obvious choice here, Yeezus has gotten me through many (okay probably like 4) 2 mile runs in the past year. Of course I had to throw Kendrick in, seeing as Rachel took my original second place choice (Childish Gambino's Bonfire) plus Backseat Freestyle is pretty much 100% in your face. Tap Out was kind of a throw in, because honestly any hip hop song tends to get the job done for me.

JEN
1. Werkin' Girls - Angel Haze
2. m.A.A.d. city - Kendrick Lamar
3. Dark Horse - Katy Perry
I have the most random list of all time. Hate on me. Number 1 is from the movie The Heat starring Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy so you really can't go wrong. It's also just girl power to the max and that always pumps me up. I'm following that track up with more Kendrick, surprise surprise. This song makes me so pumped with that consistent beat in the background. Also, every time they yell "yah yah yah yah" I feel the need to fist bump..... Anyway, the last track may seem to be out of left field but it's super emotional and spiteful which can drive any girl forward easily.

KAYLEY
1. Just Can't Get Enough - Depeche Mode
2. She's Not Afraid - One Direction
3. Roar - Katy Perry
So, I think everyones top three are a little bit random considering different things motivate different people. My number one is Just Can't Get Enough it's an eighties classic and it really gets me going. I think a lot of eighties music would be ideal for working out. Second, another real up beat song by none other than my favorite idiots - One Direction. I sometimes just listen to their entire albums but I picked one that really gets me pumped. Last but not least, Roar by Katy Perry - she has a lot of good pop/upbeat songs to choose from but I really enjoy Roar because I find it to be really empowering (to me at least). Especially the line "I went from zero, to my own hero".

TORI
Hate Me Soon- Yellow Ostrich

With two male vocalists in a row, I think I'm on a roll. I've loved Yellow Ostrich for some time now. That being said, I think I gravitate towards their first and latest EP, Ghost.. I haven't actually fully listened to their second album, Strange Land, which probably makes me a terrible person but whatever. Basically anything that a loop pedal can be used for, I'm in love. Other gems from their latest EP, Ghost, would be "Ghost" and "Chills," actually, just listen to the whole thing. You won't regret it.

JEN
Hands - Alpine
After quickly becoming addicted to HAIM this week courtesy of Rachel and Tessa, I utilized the nifty link on Spotify to see Related Artists. I stumbled upon the glorious Australian band Alpine. They are similar in HAIM in sound but have a faint Tegan and Sara feel as well. This song is their most popular although the entire album is gold. I'm a little bitter that they only have one album out. They're an up and coming band, so keep an eye out! They recently toured with The Naked and Famous. HINT HINT: great study music.

TESSA
That's My Kind Of Night -  Luke Bryan
So that random playlist with 6 songs on it I mentioned last week? Still going strong this week. I'm just in a rut (in more ways than one), so sticking with the same thing is logical. This song is a bit of a curveball on that playlist. And by a bit I actually mean it's a huge curveball. But I just love Luke Bryan and everything about him, and genuinely can never get enough of his music. Not to mention, country always brings me back to summer, which I am desperately wishing will reappear at any moment now. For now, I'll have to settle for freezing temperatures, lots of blankets, and most importantly: lots of beer and country music to make me forget that it is in fact winter.

KAYSON
Bubble Gum Bitch (Xmas Version) - Marina and the Diamonds.
So, I was going to hesitate really hard this entire month NOT to do a Christmas themed song until it got the absolute closes to Christmas BUT I couldn't control myself (and to be fair this is just a xmas version of a song..) I stumbled upon this beauty last night on tumblr and have been listening to it ever since. It's honestly the same kick-ass Marina pop song about her wanting to be your bubblegum bitch with some nice sleigh bells. Enjoy.

RACHEL
Fa La La  (a cappella) - Justin Bieber ft. Boyz II Men
To answer your question, no - this isn't just a platform to continually embarrass myself. But whatever. JB Christmas is my jam as I've mentioned about a million times. Anyhow, I just downloaded the deluxe version of this album (oooooh) and this is a bonus track. I'm not quite sure how you can go wrong when you combine Bieber, Boyz II Men, and Christmas music. Most of all, it's a nice break from the typical songs on holiday stations but you can still be festive. This is how I'm justifying myself. Don't be Scrooge. Goodbye.

Christmas Wishlist

So today i'm going to give you all a little brief christmas wishlist of mine!

♡♡Urban Decay's Naked 3 palette.
The latest Naked palette from Urban Decay is my number one on the list for obvious reasons. I'm not a HUGE fan of the other two palettes but this one is just flawless. I'm a sucker for pink and purple nudes.

Aveda's "Plum Touch" face accent♡♡
Surprise! yet another Aveda product. I don't personally own this but I always touch up my face at work with this blush and I.am.obsessed. It's a perfect mix for my skin tone. Probably going to be my christmas present to myself.

♡♡Benefit's Gimme Brow
I'm obviously eyebrow obsessed if you've never been able to tell; As well as a Benefit connoisseur. So this bad boy right here is an obvious NEED for my make up collection.

Too Faced candlelight glow highlight♡♡
Last but not least, another Too Faced product I am dying to try. I'm a huge fan of snow bunny and pink leopard bronzers; So I am very curious about this highlighter. I'm a huge advocate of Watts Up by Benefit but this Too Faced product just might give it a run for it's money.

Well there's a very tiny wish list of mine for Christmas this year! I'm hoping they will be included in my after-Christmas haul in a few weeks! I hope you all have a wonderful holiday time this year.

lots and lots of love from me,
Kayson ♥ ♥

JEN
Demons - The National
Hi, my name is Jenny and I'm obsessed with The National. Literally, where have they been my entire life. SO. GOOD. If you're a fan of Alt-J, Silversun Pickups, etc, you need to go to Spotify or click on the link above and give them a listen right now. This song is off their most recent album. I haven't had a chance to listen to their entire discography (the first album is from 2001!) but it seems I may have found my finals studying music to binge on. *party*

In case you're curious, past studying music binges have been: Lana Del Rey (duh), Ellie Goulding Pandora station, and Best Coast.

TESSA
23 - Mike Will Made It
So, I don't know where I've been to have not heard this song until I was tailgating at a football game last Saturday. Apparently under a rock or something. Whatever. I honestly can't even tell you why I like this song, but it's been played an obscene amount of times this week. I put it on a Spotify playlist with five other songs and have rarely strayed from that playlist this week. Weird, I know, but a girl's gotta do what a girl's gotta do. And sometimes that's putting on a mix of Mike Will Made It, Luke Bryan, Big Sean, Pitbull, Kid Ink and Chris Brown. It's normal really. Oh, and Miley is still fantastic. I don't care. And a little Wiz thrown in for good measure never hurt anyone.

TORI
High For This- The Weeknd
I know I've used The Weeknd before for On Repeat but lately this is what I have turned to when I have taken the rare break from Midnight Memories. The Weeknd is just ridiculous. It came on shuffle on my Spotify playlist and I had that moment of, "why haven't I listened to this in so long?" So, I'm proud to say that I haven't listened to Midnight Memories in...a day. Regardless, this is also fantastic study music. For finishing up studying/homework/projects I've definitely been hooked on The Weeknd and the Tron soundtrack (thanks, Rachel).

RACHEL
No Need for Eyes - The Growlers
I’ll admit, my selection for this week isn’t going to be to everyone’s taste. Spotify recommended me
The Growlers so I thought I’d have a listen. They have a slightly old school vibe, like maybe Pink Floyd meets Beach Boys? Does that make sense? No. But whatever. They’re a bit out there but they’ve grown on me. I’m not quite sold on the whole album but there are definitely a few gems. Hung at Heart is mellow without lulling me to sleep – much appreciated at work when I am tired and people are a big no for me. They’ve been a nice way to switch things up from Christmas music (JB MISTLETOE AMIRITE). If you wanna get a lil’ weird, I highly suggest checking these dudes out.

KAYSON
You Oughta Know - Alanis Morissette
So, if you don't love angsty morisette you dont know what youre missing. I've always liked this song but due to recent life changes I have been blasting this song in my car like there's no tomorrow. If you're going through a break up I highly recommend her entire album. This song especially. Plus, who doesn't love 90s female angst? 10/10 would recommend. Plus she talks about gettin' down in a movie theater, it's great.

Damage Remedy and Pure Abundance | Review

I'm baaaaaaaack. So, as some of you may have noticed I've taken a little "break" from FBG but alas, I am back and more determined to tell you alllllll about my new love affair with Aveda. If you've never heard of Aveda and what they stand for I advise taking a little trip over to Google and read up about it. Now, I miiiight be a little biased because the salon/spa I work at sells Aveda products; but to be honest I've been using Aveda since I was 12 and working at a place where I can get my hands on it a little easier just ramped up the obsession. Anyways, I'll stop blabbing about how great Aveda is and start doing my mini review!

Damage Remedy Shampoo
So, with me having very damaged hair over the past few years Damage Remedy was like a breath of fresh air. The smell is amazing, made with organic and natural ingredients so you know it's not going to be harsh on your hair, and last but not least it's helping repair it. I've been using it for a little over two weeks now and I can really feel the difference on my ends. They're not as rough and starting to feel a bit more smooth. With the babassu and coconut-oil based formula is kind to damaged hair and uses the quinoa protein to help strengthen! It's one of my new favorite products. It may be a little on the pricier side but if you can get your hand on a sample or a trial size I promise you wouldn't regret it!

Pure Abundance Clay Conditioner
Although, I don't usually need to add any volume to my hair because I was fortunate enough to be graced with a full head of fine hair. This product helps to make my hair super bouncy and shiny; safe to say- I am lovin' it! This product has acacia senegal. The acacia gum helps add volume to fine hair. I was very skeptical about this product at first because the idea of putting clay into your hair sounds pretty heavy. I am amazed how bouncy it makes my hair.

Tutorial | Cat

Hello all! Happy Halloween! Today is hands down my favorite holiday in existence. I was a little short on time this week because I am starting a job at a salon/spa and they have me training like crazy! I did however have time to show a quick "cat look" for any feline costumes on this fine day/weekend!

It's a short video but I hope it helps and gives any ideas!

TORI
Back to Black- Amy Winehouse

I was never really a massive fan of Amy Winehouse. Of course her voice is awesome, but I just never got into it. That is until I was randomly watching The Voice and heard a contestant sing this song. That was the beginning of it and I've been pretty much listening to this song at least once a day since that episode. It's kind of fitting seeing as I've been really into artists like Kendra Morris, ZZ Ward, and Arlissa. Prettaayyy soulful, jazzy vibes lately.

RACHEL
Red Eye - Kid Cudi ft. Haim

I know, I'm late to the game on Indicud. It's heinous. But like, Haim and Kid Cudi. This is a glorious collaboration I never knew I wanted. I'm going to admit, the track is a tiny bit repetitive. Still it's rap and the Haim sisters. Their vocals laid over Cudi's back beat is fantastic. Hopefully now I'll be a little less lame and give this entire album a proper listen.

TESSA
All Me - Drake

I've been meaning to post this for oh-so-long. Unfortunately, I got caught up in lots of other albums, but this has definitely been on my radar since the real release date (I wouldn't allow myself to listen to it when it leaked). To be honest, this album was a bit hyped up for my taste, still A+, just not as much as everyone was making it out to be. It was great to hear Drake do something a little more laid back, but only this song and The Language really caught my attention. Although a little repetitive, much in Drake's style, but the addition of Big Sean and 2 Chainz had me sold.

KAYSON
Across the Universe - Fiona Apple

So I don't know what exactly inclined me to listen to Fiona this week but whatever it was, I thank it. I'm not a huge Fiona Apple fan but I had never heard her cover of The Beatles "Across the Universe" (which by the way, is one of my favorite songs since I was little) and I instantly fell in love. Her sweet raspy voice did much help to the feel of this song. The same quiet tone as The Beatles themselves intended. 10/10 would recommend this cover.

JEN
Your Hand in Mine - Explosions in the Sky

This band has been a favorite of mine for a while. They got their major break from the TV show Friday Night Lights, which featured many of their tracks. I personally love Explosions in the Sky for studying when I really need to get something done. They're an instrumental group but definitely NOT boring. Their songs really grip you and you can feel the emotion even though the words are absent. Check them out, I can almost guarantee you'll be binge listening to them while studying.

JEN
If So - Atlas Genius
So while you are reading this post, it is very likely I am seeing this band in concert. They are INcredible and I'm so glad Tessa made sure I listened to them this summer. I did a little towards the end but just recently have had their entire album on repeat (get that pun there??). They have a really neat sound that reminds me a bit of Phoenix but with a quirk. Seriously, I picked a random song from the album because all the tracks are great.

TESSA
The Wire - Haim
Okay so quick change for this week's On Repeat. I was originally going to post something from NWTS, even though I promised myself I wouldn't give into the hype, I did and I still love that album. But I saw an ad for a HAIM show that was coming to town in a few weeks and had been meaning to listen to them so I finally did and my God. Why did I wait? These girls are ridiculously talented. Their album drops September 30, but they've got some singles & EPs already out. So check it folks, cause they're great and fantastic and I should've listened to BuzzFeed from the start.

RACHEL
Team - Lorde
We here at FBG are no strangers to Lorde. She's essentially the biggest musical badass on Planet Earth. Probably, anyway. At age 16, she's made it onto the Billboard Top 100 and boasts some incredibly relatable pop tracks that put some of her older counterparts to shame. If "Team" is any indication of how her new album (Pure Heroine, dropping Monday) will pan out I'll be the first to get my hands on it. The same clever lyrics have returned, and somehow the beats have gotten better still. This woman.

KAYSON
National Anthem - Lana Del Rey
Okay so, i'll be the first to admit that I honestly despised Lana when she first became a huge hit. I'm not sure why, I just didn't like her persona I guess you could call it. Yet lately, I've been very intrigued by her music(also very intrigued with her). I dig this song because of her lovely voice as well as very interesting lyrics. It's true "tell me i'm your national anthem" okay!?

TORI
Sticks and Stones- Arlissa
It's been a very woman themed week! I guess Jen didn't get the memo, jk, jk.
Anyway, Arlissa has a crazy awesome voice. It is so soulful and just I don't even know. I love this song because it is a more soul/r&b type song but then it has this amazing beat that shouldn't actually work with the song but it makes it just that much better. I can't wait to hear more from this girl!

Hair | Hair Care Routine

Hey sweet angels, today I am going to sort of give you my "hair care" routine. A few years ago I made the unfortunate decision to let a friend of mine give me a loose perm (out of the goodness of my heart clearly) for a grade at cosmetology school. Which obviously resulted in some SERIOUSLY fried hair (also doesn't help that I had a bad habit of going back and forth from brown to blonde). Sooooooo I just have really damaged hair to this day. Which means all of you get the pleasure of me giving some suggestions on what I usually do to help out my hair get back to a semi decent healthy state.

1. I try my best to get a trim at least once a month. I know you're suppose to do it much more than that but I either don't have the time or the money.

2. I know this sounds gross but I only wash my hair once or twice a week (don't worry, I shower. Just wear a shower cap). It takes awhile for your hair to get use to it but after it does it's totally worth it. Keeps all the good natural oils in your hair.

3. I use non-sulfate shampoo and conditioner! My favorite conditioner is Palmers Coconut Oil Formula repairing conditioner.

4. Whenever I blow dry, flat iron, or curl my hair I try to use a heat protectant. My favorite is Not Your Mother's Beat the Heat.

5. After I've showered I sprits on Organix Morrocan Argan Oil or Organix Coconut Oil on to my hair.

I'm sure there's many other ways to treat your hair, but those are just a few of my tricks!

Now go on and treat yo self.

KAYSON
Sorry - Naya Rivera ft. Big Sean
I'll be the first one to admit how huge of a gleek I am. Which means I like to support the actors/actresses with things outside of Glee. So, of course when Naya came out with her first single I had to listen. At first, I was like "Oh Naya...Really?" but to be honest I can't stop singing it now. It's a wonderful song if your current boyfriend has girls who want him and all you can say is "Sorry I'm not sorry. Now he's mine baby." It's pretty catchy, as if saying "Sorry I'm not sorry" wasn't easy enough to get in a habit of saying in the first place. Oh, and she sorta calls out all of Big Sean's exes at the end of the song. Damn Girl.

TORI
Supersoaker- Kings of Leon
This songs has been playing nonstop on the radio lately. I don't normally listen to the radio outside work, but am definitely not opposed to hearing Lorde and Kings of Leon played multiple times in a day. I was never a huge Kings of Leon fan, but I am for sure loving their new stuff. I don't know if I've been brainwashed due to the amount of times I've heard it, but whatever, I'm cool with it.

JEN
THE ENTIRETY OF THIS ALBUM - Pride and Prejudice
I don't know who hasn't listened to this album, but they are missing out on one of the greatest joys in life. If you like this movie even just the teensiest, listen to this album. You immediately feel transported to 19th century England and suddenly have the urge to drink tea/coffee and do homework or read some classic novel. This is one of my favorite albums or playlists to listen to when studying because it motivates me to be academic. Sounds crazy, I know, but I'm serious. Rachel is probably gonna fangirl when she sees this because she's about as obsessed with this movie as I am.

TESSA
All Over the Road - Easton Corbin
So it's no big secret that I'm a huge country music fan. But give me a break, I did live in basically in the middle of Kansas for two years. Speaking of, I've been missing MHK like crazy (so much so I've talked Rachel & Kayley into a road trip next month). Anyway, enough chit chat, down to the song. Honestly, I'm not sure what it is about this song but it's just too adorable to ignore. It's kind of like a One Direction song because no matter my mood, if I put this song on, I'll be in a good mood instantly. You just can't be in a bad mood and listen to it. It's impossible. Yes, I did just compare country music & One Direction. Bring it. Oh and did I mention how adorable he is? Look at that face.

RACHEL
Guild - Earl Sweatshirt
At this point, it's clear that I'm oblivious to Odd Future / its members. Obviously. Anyhow, Earl's new album Doris is kickass (is this my descriptor for everything cool? Maybe.) It's slightly more mellow that OF's mixtapes which I appreciate. There's a good mix of collabs, including a couple cameos from Tyler, the Creator. "Guild" has some of the best rap runs on the album, but "Hoarse" and "Pre" were also contenders for this week's selection. I haven't listened to Mac Miller much but this track has sparked my interest. Perhaps sometime before I graduate I'll listen to something not Odd Future. Es posible.

TESSA
Wrecking Ball - Miley Cyrus
Honestly, I've changed my choice for this week roughly five times, there's just been too much I've been listening to and loving lately. The first time I heard this song was actually during my PRSSA meeting on Tuesday — and love or hate Miley currently, this song is fantastic. I'll admit I'm not loving Miley's crazy side lately, but she's putting out good music regardless. "We Can't Stop" is incredibly catchy and I find myself singing it even if I haven't listened to it in a while. "Wrecking Ball" is quite the opposite but I love how raw the song is as far as the emotion behind it, and she shows that in her music video too. So if you haven't checked out this song already, I highly suggest you do. Maybe just not the music video as it's not everyone's cup of tea.

KAYLEY
The Mother We Share - Chvrches
I just recently started listening to Chcvrches not even a week ago. I'm such a sucker for female leads though, I just couldn't help myself but download a few songs. This one has been the one mainly played because of its upbeat-sweet tone. I'm not 100% on the meaning of this song because it seems to have some "deep" under lying reasoning to the lyrics but my favorite is "in the dead of night, i'm the only one here, and i will cover you until you go-o-oh" just because I feel like with some people you feel as if you're always there but they don't necessarily apprecitate it. I'm just stating my feelings towards it, I could be so wrong. Any who, I suggest this song. I really enjoy it.

RACHEL
Gravity - John Mayer
Just a wee bit of a throwback for me this week. John Mayer was muh jaaaaaam in high school. I just downloaded his new album Paradise Valley, but the jury is still out on that. He covers Skynard, so I’m just a little bit confused. But we shall see. It did however inspire me to get back into his older albums. Anyhow, though "Gravity" isn't my all time favorite of his, it’s up there (“Stop This Train” is probs my No. 1 of all time, yo). I exhaustively listened to Battle Studies as well back in the day. We’re just going to ignore the duet with Taylor Swift. If you haven’t heard this song, crawl out from under your rock and have a listen.

JEN
Only Love - Ben Howard
This song. I literally can't even. My good friend Brittany (who I have all my science classes with) has ranted about how amazing this man is but I didn't listen until now. Now it is impossible for me to stop. His entire first album is amazing so check out other songs as well! His style is akin to Ed Sheeran... so if you're a fan of Ed, you need to check this artist out. I promise you won't regret it.

TESSA
Feds Watching - 2 Chainz ft. Pharrell                            If I had to admit my guilty pleasure rapper, it would hands down be 2 Chainz. Sometimes I just listen to his lyrics and laugh because their so ridiculous. But since upgrading to Spotify Premium (finally), this has been on the Billboard Top 100 Chart, and it's been a to-go on all my drives since I have a 30-minute minimum commute to work and school. The bass is ridiculous so I feel like a badass when I'm listening to it, which is always a plus factor, at least for me. Oh and Pharrell is featured in this song, so if you didn't fall in love with him from Blurred Lines — which by the way you should have — he's also great in this song. Anyway, enjoy my guilty pleasure. I'mma be fresh as hell if the feds watching.

Obedear- Purity Ring
I was having a difficult time with what song I was going to choose this week. I've been in a music rut, I suppose. Anywho, I was watching a makeup tutorial by Augusta Jeorgia and this song was featured and I haven't stopped listening to Purity Ring. I took a break from them because when this album first came out I heard it at least 3 times a shift at Barnes and Noble, so I needed my space. But the time has come, and I can't stop listening to it again.

Thank You - Led Zeppelin
This song is in honor of my friend Conor coming to visit this weekend! This was the first Zeppelin song he introduced me to (other than the obvious famous ones) and I haven't looked back since. The guitar solo at the end is great and the message it sends is just a positive, uplifting one about someone who you find inspiring. If you haven't discovered Zeppelin yet (or 70s rock in general) this song is a great one to start with and slowly allow yourself to be consumed by the awesomeness that is and was the 70s rock era.

nature feels – Frank Ocean
I know, I know. I posted Frank Ocean last week. But I promise this song is so on point it’s worth ignoring the repetition. My brother actually introduced me to this mixtape, which you can download fo’ free. Aww yiss. The remixes are fantastic. “nature feels” is a reworking of “Electric Feel” by MGMT. So the awesomeness continues to compound. Plus “american wedding” is laid over The Eagles’ “Hotel California” and references Pretty Woman. Need I continue? Check this beauty out.

KAYSON
Little Things - One Direction
Okay okay, so I know i've recently done a One Direction song not even a month ago, but I'm SORRY, after seeing the This Is Us movie I couldn't help it. Those little assholes got me again. I will say though in January when I would be driving home late at night this song would come on the radio and I was instantly sold, and it made me happy (I know, how sappy). It's possibly the sweetest song ever written (Thanks Ed Sheeran) and sung perfectly by these jackasses. So, if you're looking for an amazingly cute song to absolutely melt over, I suggest this one.
