Hair | Hair Care Routine

Hey sweet angels, today I am going to sort of give you my "hair care" routine. A few years ago I made the unfortunate decision to let a friend of mine give me a loose perm (out of the goodness of my heart clearly) for a grade at cosmetology school. Which obviously resulted in some SERIOUSLY fried hair (also doesn't help that I had a bad habit of going back and forth from brown to blonde). Sooooooo I just have really damaged hair to this day. Which means all of you get the pleasure of me giving some suggestions on what I usually do to help out my hair get back to a semi decent healthy state.

1. I try my best to get a trim at least once a month. I know you're suppose to do it much more than that but I either don't have the time or the money.

2. I know this sounds gross but I only wash my hair once or twice a week (don't worry, I shower. Just wear a shower cap). It takes awhile for your hair to get use to it but after it does it's totally worth it. Keeps all the good natural oils in your hair.

3. I use non-sulfate shampoo and conditioner! My favorite conditioner is Palmers Coconut Oil Formula repairing conditioner.

4. Whenever I blow dry, flat iron, or curl my hair I try to use a heat protectant. My favorite is Not Your Mother's Beat the Heat.

5. After I've showered I sprits on Organix Morrocan Argan Oil or Organix Coconut Oil on to my hair.

I'm sure there's many other ways to treat your hair, but those are just a few of my tricks!

Now go on and treat yo self.

Better Late Than Never | Kayley

Okay, so I realize it's ACTUALLY Friday (the 13th, to be exact) but I am just posting to explain my recent lateness and absence. I have not been absent luckily for sickness but none other than internet problems and scheduling. For whatever reason last week I was having internet issues, and I am recently helping the opening process of an ULTA store which means working 52 hours in one week... ha, ANYWAYS I was just posting to explain myself and to inform I have a few ideas brewing in my mind on my upcoming posts. I want to do a Fall themed, "Firsts" Video, and going to attempt to do a "My boyfriend does my make up" tag video. see you all incredibly soon! :)

RACHEL
Dark Doo Wop - MS MR
Another duo has caught my attention this week, and along with them, another tale of dark love. Just trying to keep things light and upbeat for the onset of summer, yeah? Anyhow, MS MR are quite a recent find for me but I foresee them becoming a favorite of mine. I catch hints of Florence Welch and even a wee bit of Lana Del Rey in their singles. Not to mention, Lizzy Plapinger has some badass hair. Dark Doo Wop is definitely my favorite track on the EP (Though all the songs are pretty kewwwl). Maybe because "This world is gonna burn / burn, burn, burn" is how I feel during finals. But I digress. I'm fo sho looking forward to their full album release (Secondhand Rapture) on the 14th of this month, and you should too!

TESSA
Pirate Flag - Kenny Chesney
Well, it's almost summer time and while I've been downing in deadlines and studying for finals (which is to blame for the lack of posts lately, so sorry!) I've been daydreaming about summer. Which means it's time for another country song to be my pick for On Repeat this week. I don't even care if you don't like country music, if you listen to this song and it doesn't make you instantly want to be on a beach somewhere with some sort of tropical drink in your hand you're so wrong it's not even funny. That also happens to be exactly why I love this song. Because even though I'm sitting at a cluttered desk designing ads or studying for my dreaded math final or watching lectures for my online class, I can at least feel like I'm that much closer to getting to a beach and having nothing to worry about. And I traded it in for a whole other world, a pirate flag and an island girl.

TORI
Hibernate- Pretty & Nice
"Hibernate", featured on their EP US YOU ALL WE (2012), is one of my favorite tracks from this jumpy, light-hearted band (weird, I know. Not really my style). When Rachel and I went to see Jukebox the Ghost awhile back, Pretty & Nice happened to be their openers. Their stage presence is amazing, and I was hooked from the first song. If you follow their twitter, it's quite obvious that their new full length album is out, Golden Rules for Golden People; featuring some of my constantly repeated tracks, "Stallion & Mare," "Mummy Jets," "New Czar," and their new single (which now has a new video!) "Q_Q." Seriously, I have listened to nothing  else but these foxes this week.

KAYLEY

Settle Down - Kimbra
So, when Somebody That I Use To Know came out I became astounded by the amazing "Girl" voice in the song. I then found out that voice was Kimbra. Until about a week ago I forgot I had this song on my phone. The sweet tone and sort of, interesting, lyrical topic has been stuck in my head for the past few days. I suggest listening to it, if you loved her as much as I did in Gotye's song.

 JEN
Kiss a Girl - Keith Urban
I almost hate myself for putting up a country song, but that's just been my mojo. I have absolute NO desire to study for finals (which start tomorrow, oops) so I've been more focused on my summer that starts Wednesday. Does anybody else feel like it's not summer yet? What's going on? Anyway, this song is summer to a T for me. Not sure why. Guess I'm planning on kissing some girls.... er, guys. Whichever floats your boat. I'm rambling. It's 2am. Too much information on reaction-coordinate diagrams in my brain. CHECK IT OUT.

RACHEL
Fineshrine - Purity Ring
Yet again, I find myself marveling at Canada this week. Firstly, for producing Ryan Gosling. Duh. Secondly (and slightly more relevant to this post) for putting out my recent obsession – electronic duo Purity Ring. I finally replaced the piece of shit tape converter in my car, and I’ve played essentially nothing else for two weeks. Cue me being a douchebag and turning it up way too loud in traffic. The lyrics read a little more than creepy at times, and Fineshrine is no exception. But hey, I appreciate that. We can’t all sing about dancing like we’re 22. Besides, who doesn’t want someone to build a metaphorical shrine of love for them? I’m down. They’ve even covered Soulja Boy, so this lady and gentleman tick all the boxes for me. Really, what I’m trying to say is, check out deez beatz!

TESSA
Fame Is For Assholes [F.I.F.A] - Hoodie Allen feat. Chiddy Bang

This week I have found myself listening to nothing but Hoodie Allen, Kendrick Lamar and A$AP Rocky. So one of them had to be chosen for this weeks on repeat but I found myself hitting play on Hoodie Allen's Crew Cuts just a little bit more than the others. His music is fantastic, and he isn't bad eye candy either [think Sam Adams, but better music]. I chose FIFA because it's probably one of his more well-known songs off the mix tape, and I also love me some Chiddy. Plus, how could you not love this song? But in all honesty there's not a bad song on this mix tape, or on any of his albums. So if you haven't checked him out before I highly suggest you do so... like now.

TORI
Never Heal Myself- Cults
To be quite honest, I haven't listened to much else from Cults. However, that hasn't stopped this song from being played nonstop this week. Located in a playlist I made on Spotify (ohhh, playlist, how creative), this song plays out angst as well as invoking some self confidence. In the same respect as Blood Orange's Dinner, this upbeat song catches you and tricks you into not feeling so bad about wanting a certain someone to die unhappy. Starting out a bit passive aggressively, the tune and especially the ending lyrics leave you crazy sassy for hours.

KAYLEY
Totally Fucked - Spring Awakening
So, this is a bit of a change from my past two on repeats. I've told you about Marina and Best Coast. This time I am going to tell you about more of my love for broadway. One of my favorite shows is Spring Awakening (any gleeks would be happy to know this is where Lea Michele really got her name). It's sort of an "edgier" musical. Yet, one of my favorite songs from it is "Totally Fucked". It's a song that is super easy to listen to if you're feeling, well, Fucked. One of my favorite lines from it is"There's a moment you know You're fucked Not an inch more room To self destruct" I think we all can understand that feeling.

JEN

Crown on the Ground - Sleigh Bells
So I first heard this song on the trailer for The Bling Ring, a film coming out directed by Sofia Coppola which I could NOT be more excited for. This song is so catchy I can't even handle it. To most people it may just sound like noise but I think it's sassy and makes me want to come home and hang out with my Broke Girls and do crazy college things. Check it out, you'll understand what I mean!

RACHEL
Artificial Nocturne - Metric
So it's that time of the week again, eh? Which is my subtle way of telling you I've really been into Canada's Metric, and their new-ish album Synthetica. It's been sitting in my Spotify queue, neglected, for months. I've finally had a proper listen, and holy shit. It's good. I've liked Metric for quite awhile (Help I'm Alive was a good ol' high school jam), and this album is no different. Artificial Nocturne sticks out as one of my favorite tracks. It has the cool synthy beat that I've come to love from Metric. Plus, the lyrics are pretty sweet as well. I appreciate any song that spews profanity in the first line. Anywho, you all go forth and listen (and check out Breathing Underwater, Speed the Collapse, and Dreams So Real while you're at it)!

TORI
Speaking Politely- Sleepy Kitty
This St. Louis duo caught my attention when they opened for Jeff the Brotherhood (a different concert, but hell, they always have such amazing openers). Paige has such amazing style and stage presence, and when I listened to the lyrics, mega girl crush commenced. The straightforward, brutal lyrics are just what I needed this week. She sings everything I wish I could say to people. The album Infinity City (2011) contains many jams including Speaking Politely, Gimmie a Chantz!, and School's Out. I mean, sometimes it's really just necessary to say, "I've made up my mind, and if that makes me a dick then I think I'll be fine, because I can't stand to watch you waste our time."
TESSA
Heart Attack - Demi Lovato
So I had a bit of a hard time at first thinking about what my pick of the week was going to be, I even had another song chosen and written up, but I quickly changed my mind when I got to work and this song came on the radio. I have been shamelessly jamming out to this song since it came out. I'm not even that big of a Demi Lovato fan, but this song... just fantastic, round of applause, whatever — it's perfection. I wish I could say I was kidding when I tell you that I had this song on repeat for 3 days straight when I first discovered it, but I would be lying. So there you have it. Shamelessly jam out with me.

JEN
I'll Hold My Breath - Ellie Goulding
So I'm a little late on the bandwagon for Ellie Goulding, but I seriously can't get over her. Almost every. single. one. of her songs is relevant to my life in some way. The lyrics that really speak to me are "you are the risk I'll always take", although I'm not sure why. It's a lighthearted song but it still is her talking about someone she's just not over. I get that. Everyone kinda gets that. Anyway, check her out if you haven't for some reason. You've probably been living under a rock if you haven't heard of her.

KAYLEY
Our Deal - Best Coast
So, summer 2011 I was up at around 3 am (as usual) and saw the video for this song and absolutely fell in love with the sound of her voice. I began YouTubing tons of songs by Best Coast, and instantly fell in love. They have a very unique sound. Sort of beachy, groovy, and alternative. I definitely recommend listening to/watching "Our Deal" very beautiful song (and video). I also recommend also listening to "Boyfriend" and "When I'm With You". Great lyrics, great voice.

On Repeat #1

Hello fellow Broke Girls!
Every Friday, look out for our music edit: On Repeat. Each girl will be posting a song that we just can't get enough of this week, and trust me there will be something for everyone. Read on and find out what we've been loving recently, and check it out for yourself!

RACHEL
Fyah Fyah – Selah Sue
This week I haven’t been able to get enough of Selah Sue, her kickass music, and crazy hair. At only 23, this Belgian lady has been at the music game for years already. Fyah Fyah, I think, is one of the coolest tracks on the album. The beginning is quite mellow and soulful, but then bursts into some insane reggae/rap runs. Her tone is incredibly unique, even live (fellow Broke Girl Tori and I saw her this past fall). It’s been several months and I still haven’t gotten over her, so check her out dudes!

TESSA
Mama's Broken Heart - Miranda Lambert
Lately my music mood has been as random as putting my phone on shuffle, but no matter what I find myself coming back to Miranda Lambert. I've had her on my Spotify, Pandora, and on repeat on my phone. There's just something about the warmer weather (that Kansas is currently lacking) that makes me want to put country songs on repeat (currently all of my Recently Added is exclusively country). Though I love the whole album, Mama's Broken Heart has definitely been a song that I've found myself searching for to press play repeatedly.

TORI
Stoked and Broke - Fidlar
Oh, Fidlar, singing the anthems of the underachiever like Cheap Beer and, this week's song, Stoked and Broke. They had my heart when I saw them live when they toured with another favorite band of mine, Jeff the Brotherhood. The first time I ever heard them was on that tour. I also had the chance to meet them which was amazing, even if it was only for introductions; however, that turns into a longer, more embarrassing story. All that asIiide, this week has definitely been a week where Fidlar, Jeff, and Foals have been on repeat. Check these foxes out, yo!

JEN
Waste - Phish
Unlike my fellow broke girls, my choice this week is a bit of a throwback. Billy Breathes by Phish came out in 1996 (ugh, I was so young!) but I just recently discovered them on 8tracks and have not been able to stop listening to that album. They're a very chill band with obvious influences from the 70s (especially Simon & Garfunkel) and a great background to have when studying. I highly recommend them if you're feeling mellow and enjoy great instrumentals. This song I chose in particular because all I've been wanting to do is stop studying for ONE FREAKING second and just read/watch TV/do whatever the hell I want and hang out with some specially chosen people. But alas, that will not happen for another month, so in the meantime I live through this song.
KAYLEY
I Am Not a Robot - Marina and the Diamonds
So, if there's one song you should be utterly obsessed with, (or person even) Marina and the Diamonds's I Am Not a Robot has been stuck in my head for the past 7 months... yes, SEVEN months. I constantly find myself wanting to listen to Marina 24/7. Whether you're in a cocky bitch or a self-loathing little girl mood. She's the absolute perfect fit. (No but really I highly recommend I Am Not A Robot, it's amazing.)

Broke Girl No. 4

Like the three girls before me, I am crawling up to my twentieth birthday here shortly. I refuse to believe I'll be almost twenty years old, as an act of defiance I told my mother I need a cake with Mordecai and Rigby from Regular Show on it. Besides my refusal to turn twenty, I can act maturely...sometimes. I just got promoted at my job and am now working full time. On top of working forty hours a week, I somehow manage to get decent grades. I finally declared my major as psychology, you know, after changing it four times. From there, I am 100% certain I have zero ideas on what to do next. Besides work and school, I started taking guitar lessons about a month ago and am so excited! I've been playing instruments since band and orchestra in fifth grade. I can very poorly play the violin and oboe. Yet I think I could still manage to play a few scales on the flute and piccolo. Playing instruments has always been a big stress reliever in my life. Another way I cope with the stress is running. I love learning about healthy eating and yoga (I could do much better in actually practicing these...oops). Anyway! Hair care, makeup, fashion, music, concerts, health, fitness, I love it all. It's hard to divide all my love between these, but the main loves of my life are Dr. Who, Sherlock, and boy bands. So basically, you'll never know what to expect from my posts, that should keep it interesting, right?

Broke Girl No. 3

I've always imagined that once I got a beauty blog I would be a lot better at writing an about me post, but that day has come and I've been sitting here for about thirty minutes writing and erasing everything. That probably has something to do with the fact that a majority of my course work involves writing copy and I'm never satisfied with anything. That being said here goes nothing.

Verging on twenty years old and navigating this thing they call college. Majoring in strategic communication with plans to go into media relations or something related to sports. I spend an obscene amount of time looking at ads, even when I'm not in class. I also spend a lot of time watching and reading about sports, and you guessed it, beauty products. Though during the week you can find me in some variation of leggings, a men's shirt, no make up and probably day old hair in a bun, I do know how to dress and do my make-up. If I'm not downing coffee like it's air working on a deadline, you can probably find me at one of my two places of employment.

Things I can't live without: iPhone, music (anything from rap to country), a good sports game, my Vans, an amazing mascara and of course the other four Girls.

I rant a lot. And make a lot of random purchases, mostly of things I don't need, which leads to my being broke. I'm a sucker for a good lipstick or a new Essie nail color.

Be prepared for a lot of random text posts about anything — music, school, my life, beauty — you name it I'll probably post it.

xx

Broke Girl No. 2

Yeah, yeah, I know the rest of the Broke Girls are gonna give me shit about not having a baby picture but those files are not at my convenience at the moment. And I'm all about convenience. I have four more months to be irresponsible before I dispose of the atrocity that was my teenage years. I am unfortunately attending college very far away from my Girls and miss them dearly about 82.3% of the time. If you couldn't tell from that exact number I am a science major, Microbiology to be exact. That's about as far as my plans go when it comes to my future.

My obsession is definitely makeup and skincare, although I do have a slight fetish with clothes (not nearly as much as Rachel, who I pray for to the fashion gods every night). Is fetish the right word to use? Another tidbit about me is that I often say the incorrect word/phrase to the incorrect person and get teased endlessly about it for years. Alright, back to the blog, Jenny (also I talk to myself. I'm missing a few wires, okay??) I'm definitely the least capable of writing anything in any sort of format so I apologize for any mishaps my writing may create.

I can't live without a good foundation and brow filler and I don't really wear jewelry except earrings. My style is structured but definitely has the pop, and I mean POP, of color most of my fellow Broke Girls seem to loathe so much. I wear scarves all the time. I sing at inappropriate times.

Basically watch out for posts on confessions of love over snapchat, accidental sephora purchases, and complaints of organic chemistry from this girl.

Broke Girl No. 1

¡HOLA!
For all of you non-Spanish minors (unlike myself) out there, that means hello. So, I suppose I should write a little about myself. I am now nearly two decades old, much to my dismay, and as you've probably already guessed I am a college student. Currently I'm majoring in Communication Studies, yet still have essentially no idea what I want to do with my life. Leave your suggestions on career paths in the comments below. I commute to school and work a desk job on my off days, so there's rarely a time when I'm not frantically running around to oh, I don't know, look like a presentable human. I own way more articles of clothing than is healthy or appropriate for any woman. I'm working on it though! (sort of...) Makeup is also quite an issue. Needless to say a career as a financial planner probably isn't in the cards for me. What else? I pretty much loathe heeled shoes, seeing as I lack any type of grace or coordination whatsoever. If I could only wear one makeup look for the rest of my life it would without a doubt be winged eyeliner. Paint It Black by the Rolling Stones was actually written about my taste in clothing. I thoroughly enjoy sarcasm. And concerts. I take extreme, ridiculous measures to attend concerts. Side note: I am hopelessly in love with Harry Styles and fully intend on marrying him someday soon. So actually, don't worry about all those career suggestions. I've got it sorted. Anywho, I look forward to posting about school, my unnecessary purchases, interests, etc.! Hope all you fellow broke (or not) girls enjoy!
