On Repeat #50

RACHEL
Icarus - Bastille
I didn't expect to like this song so much, but there's something incredibly catchy about it. Pop rock tends to have that effect I suppose. I really enjoy the back vocals of this track, and of course the fact that Bastille hails from London is a bonus. I've now downloaded the entirety of Bad Blood and it seems like there's a good mix of slow and upbeat songs. Very interested to see how that plays out.

TESSA
All Night Longer - Sammy Adams
Can we tell I'm completely over finals/school/life in general really? By the time this is posted I will be 4 exams away from sweet freedom. Until summer classes start that is. I've always been a Sammy Adams fan, but kind of forgot about him for a while. He was a recent rediscovery on Spotify, thanks in part to Jen's wonderful "Thugnificant" playlist. Ever since last week when Rachel and I actually ventured out with people (what? Shocking, I know), I've been listening to him a lot more. He's got some great summer/party anthems and he's got a sound similar to Hoodie Allen so of course I'm a fan. Not to mention his face...

TORI
Bambi- Tokyo Police Club
Tokyo Police Club has been an old favorite of mine and they made their way into my Spotify playlist and I haven't stopped listening to Champ (2010). They have an interesting sound; it's not super indie, but I really am not sure how to describe it. Wow, not helpful, I know. Anyway, it was pretty difficult for me to pick a song because I have just been listening to this album straight through. This is actually a band that I can listen to while studying; which is pretty weird because I need absolute concentration, no vocals, while I'm studying.

TESSA
Salute - Little Mix
So I'll be honest, I was not on the Little Mix bandwagon at first. In my book, nothing could (will ever) beat the Spice Girls so I was a little reluctant. Not to mention I have insane hair envy of all of them. Perry was actually one of my inspirations to go back blonde. Anyway, I started listening to their newest album after I became obsessed with Move, which is ridiculously catchy, much like the rest of their album. As per usual, I'm obsessed with the beat of this song and it's an awesome one to blast with the windows down. This has been making the rounds as one of my most played for about a month now. If you want a glimpse into how talented these girls are, listen to Boy off this album. A freaking plus, ladies.

JENNY
Days - The Drums
My music has been in desperate need of a pick-me-up now that spring has finally arrived. Since my favorite band for the summer is Best Coast, I created a Spotify radio station (no commercials, unlike Pandora) for the band. Cue a ridiculous amount of new bands to listen to! I came across this song by The Drums and was immediately hooked.

RACHEL
People Are Strange - The Doors
It's been a bit of a stormy week in KC, so I was all about a laid back musical selection. Not to mention I'm just ever so slightly yet totally over school all together. So in comes The Doors. "People Are Strange" is obviously one of their most popular tracks but it's always been a favorite of mine. Don't quite know where you've been if you've never heard it, but don't worry it's easily accessible on Spotify. Big shout out to "Wish You Were Here" from ma home boys Pink Floyd too.

TESSA
Get Me Some of That - Thomas Rhett
I'm not exactly sure what took me so long to post this song because this is my JAM. Seriously, anytime this song comes on it's an automatic reflex to blare it and sing at the top of my lungs. I just don't think it's possible to find a better song to put you in a great mood. For whatever reason it reminds me of my freshman year of college and since I'm verging on starting my final year in just a few short months, I'm all about living it up as much as possible throughout the next year. Which means reverting to my freshman habits, and I'm not even mad about it.

TORI
Never Matter- Toro y Moi
At the beginning of the week was I was suffering from a bit of post concert depression. That being said, I had to stop listening to that band and pull myself back up (post concert depression is a real thing, okkaii?). Anywho, Toro y Moi and Blood Orange definitely did that for me. I actually haven't listened to this song in awhile, but once I started, I haven't been able to stop. If you've ever heard Blood Orange (which I hope you have because Dev Hynes is wow), Toro y Moi sort of along the same line.

jenny
Fineshrine - Purity Ring
I stumbled across this band because a good friend of mine added them to one of his playlists I follow on Spotify. I think I heard about 30 seconds of this song before realizing I had a new obsession. This is the perfect study music for me. It's electronic, it's chill, it has ethereal vocals, it's perfect. The entire album has a similar vibe to it as well. I highhhhhhly recommend them if you're looking for a new band to discover and place on repeat for the next four days.

Sing - Ed Sheeran
I have had over 2 years to prepare myself for Ed Sheeran to release new tracks, and I'm still not ready. Ed is by far one of my favorite artists but he's also pretty painful to listen to. And I mean that in the same way as when I say it's painful to listen to One Direction. They all just make me mad. I had actually been avoiding listening to Ed's new single but driving to class ended up hearing it by accident. It's a different feel from his last album, and it took me listening to it about 3 times in a row to actually get a good hold on it and decide that I like it. So if you'll excuse me I'll now be dying until June.

RACHEL
Ain't Too Proud to Beg - The Temptations
This week has been dragging on, so I seriously needed something to revive me. My brother put together a MoTown Spotify playlist and that has essentially been all I've listened to this week. It is a good switch up from the typical boy bands I turn to when I'm tired of productivity, but still have several hours of work/school left. The Temptations are catchy and awesome, which is obviously all I need from music. Otis Redding's These Arms of Mine was a strong contender this week. I really can't believe I don't listen to it more often. Spotify has a few good MoTown albums which could substitute for this playlist.

I'm pretty sure Tessa has used this exact song before, but that should just play into how awesome it is, right? I know I have used a song off of the same album, but "R U Mine," and "Do I Wanna Know," have been getting a lot of play time on the radio lately. "Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High," is no exception, I think I hear it about 3 times a day when I'm at work. I think I still prefer their older albums, but you really can't go wrong with the Arctic Monkeys.

JENNY
Empire - Shakira
Holy effffffff, Shakira's new album has been my mother flockin' JAM the past couple weeks. The first three songs are just so easy to completely rock out to and the rest of the album is just so on point. I never thought I would like Shakira's music but her song "Empire" was a free download from the Starbucks app a few weeks back so I thought I would give it a shot.... and I couldn't stop listening to it. You have to go check out this album right now, believe me. On other note, this song starts off a little slow but don't let it deceive you. This is a roll down your windows, hair in the wind, belting the lyrics while sipping on a Passion Tea Lemonade (that last part may just be me) type of song. Sing it, gurl.

Donald Trump - Mac Miller
Spring has finally and officially arrived here in the Midwest, as marked by the appearance of tornado warnings and watches, and now of course I'm just ready to fast forward to summer. I've been on a throwback of what I listened to last summer, namely Mac and Wiz Khalifa, and throwing in Chance the Rapper and Childish Gambino for good measure. I honestly forgot how much I love Mac Miller and his reentering into my life has been a welcome one. So if you need me, I'll be desperately wishing it was summer so I can drive around with my windows down blaring music.

RACHEL
A Certain Romance - Arctic Monkeys
Is there really anything to not like about this song? Answer: of course not. I haven't listened to this album in a while and I quite enjoyed its return. I've been a little short on the new music front lately so I've been revisiting a few of my older Spotify playlists. Also, can we just talk about the new app redesign? Round of applause. Anywho, this has definitely been the musical highlight of my week. Tracks like She's Thunderstorms and Black Treacle have also snuck in when I want something slightly more laid back.

TORI
You Are The Stars- Yellow Ostrich
I know I've talked about them before (relatively recently), but that won't stop me from doing it again. The more I listen to this album, the more I love it. Each song as a completely different feel to it, which is kind of different from their first album. This song is just beyond beautiful and you can tell that Alex's voice has matured a lot since their start. The lyricism is reminiscient of the EP Ghost (which I absolutely loved). Like I've said before, I cannot wait to see what else this band has in store. If only they would have a show in KC or Lawrence so I could see them live.

JENNY
Bad Girls - M.I.A.
I'm not sure why I've never listened to M.I.A. before other than her famous song Paper Planes buttttttt this song is the shit. I've been plowing through homework with midterms coming up and this song makes me feel like such a badass. She has such a different beat and feel that anyone else in the industry and that's what really draws me to her. There's also just such a swag to her music that I allllmost feel like I might have some (we all know I do). But really, go check out some of her other work. You won't regret it.

IV. Sweatpants - Childish Gambino
Let me start this off by saying that it took everything in me not to post a song from Nashville this week.  I won't say which one in case I save it for a later pick. Continuing on to relevant news: how come no one told me I was sleeping on this album? It's been in my Spotify for months and I never quite got around to it. II. WORLDSTAR really got me started on this album, thanks to none other than our very own Rachel. Thus I finally gave it a proper listen and have pretty much listened to nothing else. Also now properly regretting him when he was in Kansas City. Apparently the music gods hate me.

TORI
If I Could Change Your Mind- Haim
For some reason, I had convinced myself long ago that I severely disliked Haim. Boy was I wrong. I'm not sure I've listened to anything else the past two weeks. Any of the songs are a complete viable option, but "If I Could Change Your Mind," was probably the first Haim song to be belted out in my car. I want this to be in all caps but I'll refrain, but I am so livid that I thought I disliked them and I missed them when they were in Lawrence because I was being fucking dumbbb. That being said, you should still watch the video because it is one of my favorites of all time. Plus their style is amazing. Gahhh.

RACHEL
Teen Lovers - The Virgins
This week is another selection brought to my attention via Spotify (P.S. - Tessa so kindly pointed out that Premium is now 50% off for students). I've actually not listened to much music in the past week, I've been much more into Audible. However, this has been all up in my speakers whilst I've strayed from a book. It's catchy, which is always a plus. And they were signed to Julian Casablancas' record label. Unfortunately (according to Wikipedia) they just split up this past November. Sad. Anyhow, this is definitely my favorite of their namesake album. I'd also recommend you check out Fernando Pando.

Switch - Will Smith
An oldie but a goodie, yet again. Though this hasn't been on my radar all of this week, it definitely caught my attention perusing my Throwbacks playlist and I suddenly remembered my love affair for Will Smith. His 1997 album "Big Willie Style" was one of my favorites for a long while. We'll ignore the hideously tacky 90's name and the fact that I was only 4 when it was released. Anyway, this is one of those songs that you can turn on and I'll still call it my jam, even nearly 10 years after its release. And I'm now realizing how truly old I am getting. If you've forgotten about Will - firstly how dare you - go rediscover him and I promise you won't be disappointed.

TORI
If You Still Want Me- Veronica Falls
I'm pretty sure Spotify radio was to thank for this one. Veronica Falls kind of sounds like the Dum Dum Girls mixed with The Bird and The Bee. That makes sense because one of Spotify's related artists were the Dum Dum Girls, so, go me. I've been trying to get through the whole album this week but find myself only listening to "If You Still Want Me" and "My Heart Beats." They are probably the most upbeat tunes in terms of rhythm on this album. This band has a nice balance between female and male vocals that makes them a bit more interesting compared to other bands I've been listening to lately.

RACHEL
Stone in Love - Journey
We've had this blog nearly a year now, and I have never posted Journey?! Heinous, really. I know I say this essentially every time I choose a song, but I needed something upbeat to get me through midterms. Journey is obviously the only logical choice (and Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen but liking that song just means I'm human). I've quite enjoyed a bit of classic/progressive rock lately. Ozzy Osbourne has even snuck his way onto my playlist. But if you need something kitschy and awesome, look no further. Belt this out in the car and I guarantee your day will be better.

TORI
Killer Queen- Queen
I'm not sure what brought this on, but I have been obsessed with this song as of late. It's safe to say that everyone loves Queen, and if you don't, you're wrong. "Killer Queen" is just quirky and upbeat. This song is perfect on the drive to work to start my day. I'm not sure what it is but I've been obsessed with Queen and ZZ Top moreso than usual. That being said, Spotify radio seems to think that the Foo Fighters fit in with those two. If you figure that out, let me know.

TESSA
Crazy Town - Jason Aldean
A combination of my two favorite categories: throwbacks and country. I somehow had completely forgotten about this song until I heard it on satellite radio the other day (which is a fantastic investment btw, I highly recommend it if you can get it) and only then did I realize that it wasn't on my country playlist. 500 songs, and this wasn't here. SMH. Continuing on, this song is just too catchy and plus we all know my desperate need to move to Nashville ASAP, so for now I've settled on listening to this song an obnoxious amount of times.

RACHEL
II. WORLDSTAR - Childish Gambino
It's been awhile since I've posted about rap, so it's beyond time I start again. Somehow I've managed to neglect because the internet in my queue, and ohhh what a mistake that was. I still need to properly (read: obsessively) listen to it but for now I can't stop jamming to this track. Gambino subtly references The Little Mermaid so you know it's a winner. This has made a week of hellish school and work marginally less painful.

I Hold On - Dierks Bentley
We all knew the come back of a country choice for On Repeat was coming, and here it is. I've had his new album replaying (along with Cole Swindell's and Jake Owen's) all week long, desperately craving spring/summer weather. The amount of times I've heard this song this week is probably reaching a disgusting amount, but every time it comes on I don't have the will power to skip it, or to not turn it up and sing along. I watched his performance on The Tonight Show of this song and he absolutely killed it, which made me love it, and him, even more. And now I'm going to sound like everyone else this week - go get his album. You won't regret it.

TORI
My Moons- Yellow Ostrich
I know it hasn't been too long since I've talked about a Yellow Ostrich song, but they are bordering on my favorite band right now. I figured I would take a break from all the female vocals and talk about them since their newest album, Cosmos, came out recently. I honestly haven't even listened to the rest of the album because this song has been replayed non-stop. I mean, it's like the fourth song so I've listened to some of it. I have loved this band for about 3 years now since I heard their first album, The Mistress (2010). With changing line-ups, two albums, and an EP out, this band just keeps progressing and I can't wait to see what's next for them. Plus this link is to a live version, so consider yourself lucky.

RACHEL
American GirlTom Petty & The Heartbreakers
Since Tori was a total l0ser and stole my choice for this week (Things Are Fallin' - off the same album) I'll go with something I rediscovered last week. Spotify actually reminded me of it's existence while I was searching for a horrendous (awesome) pop song by Bonnie McKee under the same name. If you haven't heard this song, I'm not quite sure where you've been. Plus, why is Tom Petty's face just naturally sassy? Is it just me?

JENNY
The Beginning... - John Legend
One of my friends at school recommended that I start listening to John Legend after discovering the variety of music I listen to. I have one of his older albums but could never really get into it for whatever reason. However, I gave him a second change and Legend's most recent album is my jaaaam. He reminds me of a more soulful (and less sexual) version of The Weeknd (who we all love here at FBG) and also Frank Ocean. If you have any interest in either of those artists, you need to check his newest album out, Love in the Future. Also, this song has Winter Song by Ingrid Michaelson and Sara Bareilles in the background, which just adds to its perfection.

TORI
World Music - Ahnnu
I feel like choosing one song from this album would just be unfair, so I chose the whole thing. They are all pretty short tunes (:45-2:12) and I listen to it in its entirety. I learned of Ahnnu from Jenn Im (clothesencounters) in one of her favorites videos awhile back. Ahnnu has released quite a few new albums since World Music and I'm still sifting through them. This album is especially amazing for when you need to be productive and the entire discography is on Spotify. I know my study playlists are beyond weird, it's either Ahnnu, Marianelli, or the Tron soundtrack. It's fine.

TESSA
Move If You Wanna - MIMS
Once again, I'm on the throwback train this week, but a little further back this time. Nelly Spotify radio has been my JAM all week long, and I regret nothing. If you're in the mood for some good 2000's rap/hip-hop throwbacks, look no further. I loved MIMS when he first started, and I still love him now. Can we please just bring him back? What happened to him anyway (VH1, MTV - I want a full report)? So basking in my glory days of sophomore year of high school (ha. haha. hahahahaha. NO), I shall continue to enjoy my throwbacks. And I'm sure you're all glad to have a break from a country pick (but it's been of no shortage in my life, not to worry).

RACHEL
Little White Lies - One Direction
I really did try to find another song for this week, honest. But for some reason this has been in my speakers much more than usual this week. Perhaps because school is horrendous and I need a pick me up? Either way, this is a real gem off their newest album Midnight Memories. Since I'm likely beating a dead horse with the whole "One Direction is stupidly, ridiculously awesome" bit, I'll leave it there.

JENNY
Erase Me ft. Kanye West - Kid Cudi
I've been listening to Kid Cudi exclusively on repeat for the past few days. It feels a bit like a throwback to senior year of high school since I went to one of his concerts that year with Rachel but I never really got into his music even after that. This song is a good introduction to his music (and rap in general) because it's not really in your face and has a dopeass beat. Yeah, I just used that word so get over it. Check him out.

Who Gon Stop Me - Jay Z & Kanye West
Aaaand I'm back, with something not country. You're welcome, I suppose. I've been in a bit of rediscovery mode this week; Which, yes, has included some country as well. Ultimately though, Jay & Yeezy took back my heart with this album. I genuinely forgot how good it was. I don't know how that's possible, but it happened. Anyway, I really love this album as a whole, but after that wonderful, wonderful K-State win, I've been on a bit of a binge with this song in particular. So if you've been living under a rock and never listened to this album, go right now and do it. You won't regret it. And if you're like me, dust it off and give it another whirl because it's wonderful. Other honorable mentions for this week: H.A.M., Gotta Have It and Otis.

TORI
Fall In Love- Phantogram
I've been in love with Phantogram for quite some time now. So when I heard their newest single I automatically fell in love. "Don't Move" and "Fall In Love" as well as a lot of Dum Dum Girls have been played this week. Phantogram is known for their electronic sound and I, for one, can say that I'm beyond excited to hear the upcoming because the single is so damn catchy and good.

JEN
Someone Else - Miley Cyrus
Tessa has long sung the praises of Miley Cyrus' new album but I just got on the bandwagon. I haven't been able to stop listening to her album and picking a favorite was one of the most difficult decisions I made this week. Miley really outdid herself on some of the tracks while others still seem somewhat immature. Other songs to check out on the album: Maybe You're Right, Do My Thang, and of course, Wrecking Ball and We Can't Stop.

RACHEL
Chances - The Strokes
Lo siento, I have to post The Strokes again this week. I finally got a chance to delve into their new album, Comedown Machine. "Chances" is slightly more mellow and laid back than their usual tracks but it's still a winner for me. It really showcases Julian's vocals, but obviously still has the cool synthy sound they're known for. Honestly, I think I still prefer their older albums but still this newest addition a fantastic way to switch things up. I'd also highly recommend you have a listen to "Call it Fate, Call it Karma" and "50/50".

JEN
Teleport 2 Me, Jamie - WZRD feat. Desire
This song is my jaaaaam. Fun fact: WZRD is actually Kid Cudi. This song was released in 2012 and the fact that I have spent two years without it in my life makes me depressed. The background music by Desire is one of my other favorite songs ever, Under Your Spell, from the Drive soundtrack. This song has an ethereal feeling to it from Desire while maintaining the catchy beat Kid Cudi is known for. Also I just find it super relevant, being in a long-distance relationship and all. You'll find yourself singing (rapping) along to this while walking to class, I can guarantee it.

TESSA
Beachin' - Jake Owen
This week's choice is brought to you 100% by Rachel's love for this song. And also satellite radio, but mostly Rachel. Are you even expecting anything else from me at this point? I promise I'll get back on my music game (outside of country) sometime. As much as I wish I could credit Rachel for this, it's actually just because it's about -5000 degrees with a foot of snow on the ground here in lovely Kansas. And as much as I love winter, I would much rather be on a beach. So I've been listening to this and avoiding the fact that it's actually negatives outside, along with the fact that there's not a margarita in my hand — though there have been several mimosas. Not to mention this song is super catchy and you can't help but sing along when it comes on. Unless you don't like country, in which case I feel sorry for you. This will probably be another summer anthem for me so on that note — summer, please hurry.
TORI
All Night- Grand Ole Party
Hopefully this will cancel out the horror of country as listed above (sorry, Tessa). Anyway, my song choice was initially "Fire In My Head" but I couldn't find a link (life is rough). Anyway, I love this girl forever, Kristin (Dee Dee) because her voice is actually ridiculous and she has the style to match. Dee Dee played drums and sang in Grand Old Party and is now currently the vocalist and guitarist in Dum Dum Girls, which I adore as well. I have had Under Our Skin on repeat all week and I don't see that stopping any time soon.

RACHEL
You Only Live Once - The Strokes
Seeing as I've been cooped up in my room nearly all week thanks to this shit show of a snowstorm we had, I really didn't branch out musically. My life was mostly consumed by YouTube. Lo siento. However, I did listen to some old school Strokes pretty heavily the past couple of weeks. I know I've mentioned Julian's solo album but I love the group just as much. "You Only Live Once" is definitely in my top five of their discography, along with "The End Has No End", "Electricityscape", and "Someday". Unfortunately, I haven't properly listened to their newest album Comedown Machine but I do like "Tap Out" thus far. They never fail to be kickass, so if you haven't checked them out pleaaaaase do.
