Alloy Eyes

Out of necessity, my morning makeup routine is quite elementary. I’m not one to employ the ranks of several eyeshadows for a single look. Instead, I opt for simple, yet effective products that don’t skimp on longevity. Cream eye shadow is the answer to my cosmetic prayers. A subtle wash of bronze is a fail-safe option, and I have two I rely upon.

Now that I’ve acquired a few of MAC’s cream bases, or ProLongwear Paint Pots, they’ve become a staple in my makeup arsenal. Indianwood is an orange-based bronze, which isn't done justice in photos. I use it alone, blended a little through the crease and taken along the bottom lash line for added definition. For full opacity, fingers work best (though I do use the Real Techniques Brow Brush for the lash line).  If you’d prefer a sheer metallic wash, a fluffy blending brush will do the job. I find synthetic bristles work best with cream products. However, natural bristles will do in a pinch. To up the shimmer, I also enjoy throwing on a bit of Urban Decay’s Half Baked, just at the center of the lid.

On the budget end of things, Sonia Kashuk offers the same effect for less. The Pearlescence Longwear Creme in Tiger’s Eye is a nice alternative to my earlier mention. Though a slightly more icy bronze once on the lid, opacity is adjustable and creasing is held at bay. Fingers or a brush will blend this out equally well, but the texture is a little lighter than a Paint Pot so more layers may be required.

The Gloss Over

As you well know, the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem. So here goes: I’m addicted to lip gloss. Much like Tori, I blame essiebutton. I was never too keen on gloss but eventually something clicked and I’ll never look back. Spring and summer are the harbingers of fresh makeup, and lip gloss fits that bill. Bold, matte lips are lovely but pose the risk of seeming over-done. Not to mention they can be tricky to maintain. Just a touch of lip gloss adds color and shine while remaining convenient. After my epiphany, I've found a few favorites. Give these a go if you're a little hesitant of gloss.

ALMAY COLOR + CARE LIQUID LIP BALM in 700 Cantaloupe Crème
Perhaps the most subtle of this trio, this is an easy finish to any look. The pastel coral subtly warms the tone of your lips which is lovely with a bit of a tan. This does feel more like a balm than a stereotypical gloss. No signs of stickiness here, just a respectable dose of moisture. The pigmentation is sheer, so nice for more casual days.

MILANI BRILLIANT SHINE GLOSS in Sweet Grapefruit and Coral Crush
This offering is very much classed as a traditional lip gloss – candy-scented and quite sticky. It doesn’t disappoint in terms of shine, though. I also find that the tackiness fades after an hour’s wear or so. While the color payoff isn’t equal to a liquid lipstick they aren’t incredibly sheer. Sweet Grapefruit adds a pretty pink flush to the lips, while Coral Crush is a good option for those a little timid of orange.

NYX BUTTER GLOSS in Peaches and Cream and Strawberry Shortcake
This duo is another set of shades perfectly suited for the season. These are essentially just an amped up version of the Almay balm/gloss hybrid. They offer more sheen and are nearly on par with a lipstick. These fade gracefully and won’t feather or bleed.

Are any of you gloss converts? Which formula would you prefer?

Review | Maybelline Color Whisper vs. Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter

In my last post, I mentioned both of these products. They are pretty similar in packaging and formula and I thought a comparison post would do nicely for them. Maybelline advertises this product as a gel with pigments for see-through color. The Revlon Lip Butter claims to be a gel-like butter that gives a sheer color to the lips. I was actually kind of confused because I didn't really think of these products as gels.
I own two of the Maybelline Color Whisper Lip Colors; Made-it Mauve and Berry Ready. I absolutely love Made-it Mauve. It is a perfect nude color for me. It's not super light and doesn't have a lot of brown tones, so it doesn't make my skin look muddy. The formula of this is really nice. I don't feel like I need a lip balm under it like I do with matte lipsticks (or lipsticks in general). That being said, I do use my ELF Lip Lock Pencil to help with staying power. I've noticed that with using that, it stays on for about an hour and half.
The Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter is just as moisturizing as the Color Whisper Lip Colors. I will say that the color on these is a lot more sheer. The Maybelline lip colors are extremely pigmented, so if you are wanting a vivid shade but something pretty sheer, I would go for the Revlon product. I use the ELF Lip Lock Pencil with this product as well and it has about the same lasting power.

5 Under $5

Sometimees I feel like I neglect the name of the blog. A lot of products that I talk about are far from budget friendly. I have nothing against drugstore products, I just get extremely caught up in the packaging and the hype of higher end products. I thought in this post I would show some love for the products that are budget friendly and that don't skip on quality.

ELF | Lip Lock Pencil ($3.00)
In all honesty, this is my absolute favorite ELF product. I have been using this for as long as I have been interested in makeup. It keeps your lipstick from feathering or moving around and definitely helps the staying power of anything you are wearing. That leads to less touch-ups and overall frustration that sometimes goes along with the whole shindig.

NYX | Jumbo Eye Pencil ($4.49)
I own two of these. I own Iced Mocha and Milk. I love using Iced Mocha as a base color and Milk as a brow highlighter or in my waterline. I typically use a primer under Iced Mocha just to ensure that it doesn't crease or smudge. These blend in easily and I love the consistency of the product.

Revlon | Colorstay Nail Enamel ($4.99)
You guys should know by now that Revlon is probably my favorite drugstore brand. I think I say that about every time I mention it,  oops. They're nail polishes are no exception, they are a nice quality without the price of Essie or ahem Deborah Lippmann (although I would own all her polishes if I could). I have never had an issue with any nail polish I have purchased by this brand and they usually have a really nice color range as well.

Maybelline | Color Whisper Lipcolor ($4.74)
For a little bit cheaper than the Revlon Colorburst Lip Butter, the Color Whisper Lipcolor offers a nice range of colors. I actually think I like them better than the Revlon Colorburst (I'm sensing a comparison post coming your way). These are extremely pigmented for a drugstore lip color. I own Made-It Mauve and Berry Ready and would reccommend them both.

Revlon | Colorstay Blemish Concealer ($4.28)
I have had a love/ hate relationship with concealers. I love the idea of concealer but have yet to find one that I am massively obsessed with. That being said, this concealer is the best one I have found and for a pretty good price. I don't really use it as a blemish concealer though. I usually just pat this in with my Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge and it tones down any redness I may have.

What are your favorite budget friendly products?

The Nude Lip Edit

While I am quite the fan of a bright lip, some more muted options have been making their way on to muh lips recently. However, I find them a little difficult to tackle. Brighter hues are usually never an issue for me – but oh man nude lips can go oh so wrong. If you weren’t aware, I am actually a ghost. Anything that erases the color from my face (foundation, lipstick, etc) has a tendency to transform me into a corpse. Not exactly the look I’m going for - though I do feel pretty dead sometimes (I’m looking at you Mondays). For this reason nude lips require more effort. The undertone, opacity, and shade all have to be spot on or I look like I could be cast in a horror film. Fortunately, I’ve found a few options that have worked for me, so I hope these offerings can be of assistance in your quest for the best naked lip as well.

p.s. try to keep in mind that a nude lip is very dependent on skin tone, coloring, and preference so not all of these options will be universally flattering but some are adaptable to suit your complexion!

Concealer
I know, I know. This is a bit of a beauty taboo. Concealer lips drain all life from the face and sometimes look downright freaky. I promise – this is completely wearable. I picked up this tip after watching Tanya Burr’s Eleanor Calder tutorial, and have quite enjoyed wearing it. I prefer to use a light reflective concealer pen lightly swept over a thicker lip balm. At the moment, my combo includes Clinique Airbrush Concealer + eos balm. Make sure your lips are well exfoliated and moisturized, because concealer can accentuate any imperfections in texture. Avoid anything too thick or opaque, as they will look overdone and cakey. Still, using your concealer ensures that the undertone and shade already suit your complexion, you double up utility of a product, and it’s applicable to all skin tones. Not the longest lasting of options yet still pays off a nice look.

Maybelline Color Whisperer | 10 Bare to Be Bold
If you’re a bit hesitant of a getting nekked with your lip color, this would be a great place to start. Slightly sheer and pink toned, it won’t be a full on nude mouth. Allowing the natural pigment of your lip to show through will give a muted effect without crossing the line into concealer lips. Bonus: since it’s a tinted balm it will be low maintenance and won’t dry the shit out of your lips.

L’Oreal Colour Riche leGloss | 151 Baby Blossom
Again, if you’re nude-shy this may be for you. I’m not one for lip gloss. Seriously. This is the only one I own. I picked it up after realizing it was a spot-on dupe for Revlon’s gloss in Bellini, scent and everything. Though I don’t have much to compare it to, it’s not overly sticky or glossy. The peach tint of the gloss will take away some of the pigment of your lips but won’t look too far from natural. Another low maintenance lip for lazy days.

Rimmel London Moisture Renew Lipstick | 644 Let’s Get Naked
The cheeky name and smooth formulation of this baby have led me to love it. The creamier texture avoids any flaky lip faux pas (wow go me I’m an A+ writer…) but still delivers on opacity. The shade is a true peachy-pink, which is the default description when a color really can’t be pinpointed. But fo realz, it’s a peach toned pink. It won’t be draining on most skin tones since the pink gives it a very subtle pop. I particularly like this for days when I wear darker eye shadow to keep everything more natural and effortless (because bronze eye shadow is so natural). Whateva.

Rimmel London Moisture Renew Lipstick | Nude Delight
Lastly is the most nudey-nude I own. My vocab is on point today. Moving on, this is definitely more peach-toned than Let’s Get Naked and thus is more of a classic nude lip. As the name would suggest, it is in fact delightful to wear. The formula works well for me, and the shade plus the slight sheen don’t make me look dead. Bingo. It’s ticked all the boxes.

I’m going to spare you nice people from any more weird variations on the word “nude”, and I’ll see you next week. Baaaaiiiiii.

Review | Hard Candy Blush Crush Baked Blush

With most everyone after a luminous, radiant complexion highlighters seem to have become a staple in most people's kits. I'm definitely in the cream/liquid camp in terms of preference. Be it eye shadow, blush, or base I find that a creamier consistency gives a nicer finish and is easier to work with. Yet this Hard Candy Blush Crush Baked Blush (an unnecessary mouthful, in my opinion) in Honeymoon has altered my mindset slightly.

Though marketed as a blush, I find this to be much more suitable as a highlight. Granted I do have a skin tone comparable to Casper. Still, the pale peachy tone and the strong iridescence lend themselves to it. The lavender marbled through the blush also makes this a great shade for you cool undertoned ladies out there (like moi). Sadly I fear that anyone with a warmer complexion may end up looking a wee bit ashy and should opt for something more gold-based. Plus, unless you have flawless skin with a complete absence of pores, I would steer clear of the apples of the cheeks if you wish to avoid accentuated pores. So as a blush, I find it a little useless.

That's the end of the con list my friends. Utilized to achieve said glowing skin, I can rely on this. I sometimes find that baked powders can be just that - a bit powdery and/or chalky. However, this is fairly soft and not messy in the slightest. Applied to the tops of my cheekbones, the bridge of my nose, and my cupid's bow it creates a subtle shine that could never come off as glittery.

As opposed to a cream highlight, this powder boasts a solid lasting power. It is so finely milled that the powder formula doesn't irk me at all. There is a fair amount of product in the compact, and it is definitely affordable at only $7. Especially since I find it quite difficult to find a good highlighter in the drugstore. There are a few other shades in this range which all seem to have a strong sheen, so have a gander and see if there's a shade to suit you.

Au revoir!

Haircare Routine | Rachel

Hello ladies & gents! As the title clearly indicates, today I'll be sharing what I use to take care of my hurrrr. Just as a reference, my hair is quite fine - so it tends to get flat and oily quickly. However, I like more voluminous and textured locks. Think bedhead. I typically just wash my hair at night and brush through it (using a Goody TangleFix), and then leave it to dry overnight. This way, I avoid excessive heat use by skipping blow-drying and have a little bit of body when I wake up. Anyhow, if you're at all interested in what I use to "tame the mane" as they say, read on.

THE STANDARDS

John Frieda Full Repair Shampoo & Conditioner
Not Your Mother's Clean Freak Refreshing Dry Shampoo
As previously mentioned my hair tends to be flat, lifeless, pancake-esque - or any variation of those words you can conceive. Thus, it probably doesn't make much sense that I'd be using a a damage-correcting shampoo and conditioner regime. I still do use a curling wand and/or flat iron slightly more than occasionally. Plus, since I feel compelled to wash on a regular basis I shy away from anything that is going to dehydrate my hair. However, I think John Frieda's version is quite different from other brands' lines. It is branded as a "full body" duo that won't weigh your hair down.  The best part is that this combo actually delivers on it's promise. I've noticed it's much easier to comb through my hair and these leave it looking shiny and healthy. Even better, I've never once felt that horrendous heavy feeling. Now, if you have drier or coarser hair I think you may want to opt for something more heavy duty. Though for you fine-haired ladies who color or heat style - this line may be for you.

Even though I do wash regularly, I try to avoid doing so every day. First of all, my shampoo and conditioner magically poof away after about 3 weeks. I've also never quite understood "second day hair" in all its glory because I look more like a hobo than a tousled-haired goddess, but whatever. To hold me over on the in between days, I turn to the Clean Freak dry shampoo. Thus far it's the best I've tried in terms of both scent and functionality. As a bonus, it does actually add volume and grit which is perfect for achieving that bedhead aesthetic.

THE SAVERS

Organix Renewing Moroccan Argan Oil Weightless Healing Dry Oil
Not Your Mother's Beat the Heat Thermal Shield Spray
Palmer's Coconut Oil Formula Replenishing Hair Milk
Catwalk by TIGI Oatmeal & Honey Conditioner
Alrighty, so these are all my saviors when it come to my hair. Tangles come with the territory of fine hair, so I'm always on the lookout for something that will remedy this. This Organix oil scared me a bit at first, because I didn't want to add anything heavy to my already weighed-down hair. In spite of said fear, this is A+ as a detangler that doubles as a treatment. I've found it to be much more effective than my Suave Kids option I'd used in the past. It smells fantastic, and the spray delivers a fine mist (I apply to damp hair) that doesn't lead to any stringy strands.

Basically, all I have to say that distinguishes this Not Your Mother's heat protectant is the smell. Its scent is dabomb.com. Most of the time I just spray this on my hair to smell like a fresh ass summer's day. Seriously. I guess it's also cool that it stops me from frying my hair but that's honestly an afterthought. Most products like this are incredibly similar so if you're in the market for a new heat spray BUY THIS.

On days where I don't want a heavy condition but I still need a little nourishment, I turn to this hair milk. This smells nice as well, but isn't overpowering. It aids in detangling a wee bit, but gives my hair a break from anything too heavy. Plus, there's no sulfates or parabens. Woooohoooo.

I keep rattling on about scent...but seriously this shit smells like I got all domestic and baked a batch of oatmeal raisin cookies. Damn. This is marketed as "comfort food for dry hair" so I use it sparingly; about once a week. If I'm honest, it hasn't done anything groundbreaking for my hair. It conditions well, but I don't even notice much of a difference from my normal conditioner. The scent does linger though, so I enjoy it every time I use it. At $15 a bottle (though I've seen double packs for the same price, angering) I probably won't repurchase it but I love that my hair smells like Betty Crocker's kitchen once a week.

THE STYLERS
Aussie Sprunch Flexible Hold Hairspray
Organix Moroccan SurfPaste

Though I do like volume and texture, I'm not looking to achieve anything crunchy or stringy. Keeping this in mind, I almost always go for a light or flexible hold hairspray so I have both hold and movement. Aussie's Catch the Wave Sprunch hairspray fits the bill perfectly. The aerosol can gives a fine, even mist but still allows me to run my fingers through my hair. Oh, and guess what? It smells good.

To give my hair some grit and a little extra hold, I turn to this Organix paste. Using about a dime-sized dollop, I run this through the middle and ends of my hair after I've used a curling wand. I even use it when my hair is straight if I'm craving a bit of messiness (note: I usually am.) It smells exactly like the oil I use as a detangler, so obviously I approve. Plus, since it has sea kelp and Argan oil it isn't too drying on my hair. If you want something a bit more nourishing than salt spray, this would be a great alternative. I'm also fairly sure this stuff will last for all eternity, so I suppose that's the ultimate bargain.

See errbody next week!

Review | e.l.f Studio Blush (ONLY $3!)

Hello lovelies!

Today I'm going to be reviewing one of my all-time favorite beauty products: E.L.F. Studio Blush. I came across these on a whim one day in Target (surprise surprise) and completely fell in love with them. The best part is that they're only $3! I have three now: Candid Coral, Tickled Pink, and Pink Passion.

Disclaimer: I may not get swatches up today considering I'm working all day and then helping someone move in tonight.

Anyway, these blush products are amazing.

candid coral
Candid Coral is a nice tan-orangey shade that gives you a sun-kissed look without overdoing it like bronzer can. I wouldn't say it's a standard coral color by any means but rather warms up the face. I recommend this if you have warm undertones (although I think Rachel uses it occasionally as well).

tickled pink

Tickled Pink is a beautiful, natural color that I swipe on when I'm in a hurry to give my face a nice glow. I think this color could look great on everyone no matter what your undertone is. It's a rosy pink that makes it look as if you went out in the cold briefly... which doesn't make sense in the summer. But basically it just looks great.

pink passion

Pink Passion is CRAZY bright in the packaging but completely brightens up your entire face when you put it on. You don't need much and that's why I love it! I think I use this one most often because I really like having bright cheeks. Not clown cheeks, just enough color to make it look as if I'm awake because I honestly probably feel like death on the inside, especially if I haven't had coffee.

In conclusion, these are all amazing and I recommend them SO much, especially if you're looking for a new, cheap blush!

Review | Hot Buns

Hello! So I'm sure maybe some of you have seen the infomercial for Hot Buns on TV. I was at CVS the other day and it was only 25% off of $9.99. So I decided to just go ahead and try it out because I usually rock a messy bun anyways.

So you're gonna get something that looks like this. You'll read the directions given on how to insert it into your hair.

After a little bit of struggle to get my layers tucked in and not have it be an gigantic mess. It ended up pretty good and secure. I only had to use one bobby pin ( If you dont have layers, you probably wont have that problem. I just have layers so its tricky)

I think it turned out pretty well for something at a drugstore and for the price.

Unfortunately, unlike the commercial says; my after bun hair was not "voluminous curls" more like a rats nest. (Then again, it might depend on hair type and length.)

Pros
Reasonably Priced
Comes with two sizes small and large for different hair types
Can find in blond, brown, black
keeps your bun very secure
Non time consuming

♡Cons
Can be tricky if you have layers
Leaves your after hair in a state of havoc
Might have to throw in a bobby pin or two

I give this product an 8. I would definitely recommend trying it out!

Everyday Makeup | Rachel

Ayoh ladies & gents, I'm back for my weekly post to let you know what makeup I've been turning to recently. Seeing as it's gotten quite hot here as of late, aaaaand I give myself very minimal time to get ready in the mornings, everything is fairly simple.

As I demonstrated in my Get Ready With Me video a few weeks back, I've stuck with my Vitamin E Illuminating Moisture Cream from The Body Shop. Combining my skincare and highlighting gives me a solid minute extra in bed. Woopwoop.

To follow, I use my Urban Decay tinted moisturizer to provide SPF and a wee bit of coverage. The light reflecting aspect also helps to keep my skin looking healthy under the harsh lighting at work.

My Revlon Colorstay concealer (obviously) comes in to cover any spots, and I also dab a little under my eyes just to help cancel out some of the darkness. I usually couple this with my Rimmel Stay Matte powder, which aids in keeping my concealer on all day.

Eye makeup always seems to take the longest for me, so to buy myself some additional Z's I simply curl my lashes and use a few coats of Covergirl LashBlast Length mascara to give the illusion of awakeness.

Lastly, to remedy my extreme pastiness, I go to my Covergirl Clean Glow bronzer (120 Spice) and Maybelline's Dream Bouncy Blush (30). This bronzer can adapt to a deeper tan shade, or a more subtle peachy glow - much appreciated for the pale among us. The blush is a very creamy texture, maintaining my dewy finish. Plus, I'm a big fan of the apricot shade.

So there you have it - this extremely lazy girl's guide to makeup. I shall return to the incredibly long Doctor Who marathon I've been having today, so allons-y and enjoy the remainder of your weekends!

5 Under 5.

As we’ve reiterated various times – we here at Five Broke Girls are a little strapped for cash. Though I still desperately wish I’d been a trust fund baby, I’ve had to face the harsh reality of my empty bank account. So, I drown my sorrows in these five products that all fall below the $5 line. Enjoy!

Johnson’s Vanilla Oatmeal Baby Wash ($4.99)
Okay, yes. I have a product designed for babies on here. Whatever. I actually have tried quite a few Johnson’s baby products (I love the Baby Bedtime Lotion). If you have sensitive skin or just don’t like heavily perfumed bath products, this may be for you. Admittedly, the aforementioned lotion is pretty strongly scented. The body washes are much milder. I believe there are five or six scents to choose from – I recommend the Honey Apple as well. They leave you feeling clean and never stripped or dry. My skin is also noticeably softer after use. Now that I’m done rattling on like a commercial, these really are a great value. They are basically a jug of body wash at 28 ounces, still only half the price of a Bath & Body Works shower gel. Plus they can double up as a bubble bath if you’re into that. So be a creep like me and go shop in the baby aisle of your local drugstore.

Essence Stay All Day 16 hour Concealer; 20 Soft Beige ($1.79)
I picked this lil’ gem up on a recent trip to UltaEssence is clearly a budget brand, but I’d never heard anything about them or ventured to check out their line. I even happened to score my bits on sale! Woohoooo. Anyhow, this is kind of a box-standard concealer and actually reminds me quite a bit of the Revlon Colorstay version I’ve been using. Just subtract $6 from the equation and you’ve got Essence-ially (HILARIOUS) the same product. In fact, I think I prefer the Essence concealer. It does stay all day on my skin – maybe not 16 hours but it does the job. I’ve had no issues with caking or creasing whatsoever. It even doubled up and worked well under my eyes. Anything that can multitask gets a gold star from me. There were only two shades though, and I picked up the darker of the two. Needless to say if you are anything past pasty, this product will not work for you (unless of course there are other shades available).

Wet n’ Wild Color Icon Eyeshadow Trio; Silent Treatment ($2.99)
Yet again, a product that’s been well raved about. These trios are a great value, even on par with e.l.f. The shadows are god damn SOFT. I particularly like this combo of shades as well. The soft pink is nice for when you want a subtle wash of color over the whole lid, or as the packaging suggests, a highlight. I don’t get much use of the glitter shade, but if anything I think it would be nice used as a liner. The bottom shade I absolutely luuuurrrv. It has an understated iridescence and is a wearable greyish hue that gives a slight smokiness. I would have paid $3 just for this shadow alone. Aside from this palette, there are some others I have my eye on – and you all should as well!

e.l.f Powder Blush; Peachy Keen ($3)
These blushes have also garnered a good deal of attention and rightfully so. They’re definitely affordable and there are plenty of flattering shades. This particular blush gives my skin a subtle golden glow/warmth. The texture is smooth, and nicely pigmented. Peachy Keen was an online purchase and I’ve yet to find it in-store. Still, most of the time e.l.f runs great deals on their site so it’s worth keeping an eye on. If you cannot possibly wait or don’t want to deal with ordering online, their other shade Candid Coral will give you a similar warmth (yet is slightly more pink-toned). Even if you don’t love these two, still check out the range because there’s something for everyone.

NYC Smoothing Skin Bronzing Face Powder; 720A Sunny ($2.99)
Tessa has already mentioned this product a few times but I’m still going to include it. Until recently I was pretty clueless when it came to bronzer. I always felt like it looked wrong on my face because it’s not like anyone would believe I was actually tan. That being said, I love this now. I’ve (quite poorly) attempted to self tan in the past few weeks and this has brought some congruence to my face and body. It's fairly fool-proof; it would be difficult to go oompa loompa with this product. Plus, it’s matte. Still, as with most lower-end lines, the shade range is extremely limited. As in this is the only shade I've come across. Regardless – if you’re one who’s slightly timid of bronzer this would be a great way to dip your toes in the pond, so to say.

Hasta luego,

Rachel
